- Bash Script: Using IFS to split the strings into tokens

IFS (Internal Field Separator) is one of Bash's internal variables. It determines how Bash recognizes fields, or word boundaries, when it interprets character strings.

$IFS defaults to whitespace (space, tab, and newline), but can be changed, below example show you how to change the IFS value to split the strings into tokens based on any delimiter, in our case we are using ':' to split the string into tokens.

Facebook seems to be the buzz word among many small businesses. Online marketing is the main way for a new customer to find your business. Since ranking in Google is a slow process and paid marketing may be out of the question, Facebook does seem like a pliable way to get business from the internet.


The Fan Page:
The first thing you need is a Facebook presence in the form of a Fan page. You can create this page from the homepage of Facebook. Before logging in, at the bottom of the sign up form is a link that says, Create a Page. Click this and fill out the information.

An important tip before you name your fan page. Once you choose a name for your page you cannot change it. So pick carefully. Once you get 25 fans to your page you will get what Facebook calls a vanity url. So your fan page will be facebook.com/name-of-your-fan-page. This is where the keywords come into play. Since Facebook is such a huge authority site to Google, your Facebook page may actually rank higher than your actual website for keywords. So choose that title carefully.

Making Your Page Stands Out:
Once visitors arrive at your fan page designate a new tab just for first time visitors. There are many services available online that allows you to build a free Facebook fan page by moving you through a series of templates than helps you install as well. Consider giving a gift to those who like your page, such as a few tips that pertain to your business. A short ebook that again, somehow compliments the service you offer them.

Getting Fans

Of course, having a Facebook presence doesn’t really work out if no one likes your page. The biggest way to get people to become a fan is to offer quality service to them. People start websites and blogs for numerous reasons — some of which are financially based. With so many options for generating revenue from a website, publishers may wonder which advertising campaigns are most profitable and which ones to avoid.
There are benefits and disadvantages to every advertising model.

1.CPM Advertising

CPM advertising is one of the most common types of performance marketing – especially for websites that have established traffic patterns. CPM advertising stands for cost per thousand, meaning advertisers pay website owners a predetermined fee for every 1,000 ad views, regardless of how well a particular ad performs.
CPM advertising is preferred by advertisers, as well as Web publishers, because of the security in knowing how much ad revenue will be spent and received.

CPA stands for cost per action. In other words, advertisers pay a fee only after a website visitor views an ad, clicks on it and completes a specified action, such as making a purchase.
Usually, the advertiser will then pay the publisher a percentage of the sale, which is generally much more than would have been paid for the web visitor’s click under a CPC marketing platform.
CPA is beneficial to advertisers, because it reduces click fraud and ensures the advertiser only pays for truly profitable conversions. Similarly, many publishers prefer CPA, because commissions can rise significantly, especially when the advertiser’s products are recommended within blog posts or an email subscriber list.
On the other hand, the wrong CPA campaign could prove useless if website visitors are not compelled to make purchases.
It is important to note, however, that many CPA programs have cooking tracking policies that guarantee publishers a right to commissions on return visits for a predetermined period of time, such as 30 or 60 days.

4.CPL

CPL, or cost per lead, is an advertising model that pays the host of the advertisement each time a website visitor completes a lead form. A lead is often an inquiry requesting more information via mail, phone call or email.
CPL campaigns usually pay a predetermined amount of money for each lead, and that payout is typically much higher than the price of a CPC click-through. CPL is beneficial to advertisers, because advertisers never pay for intangible results.
CPL campaigns are especially popular among advertisers that provide client consultations, such as lawyers, lenders and financial advisors.
Advertisers are paying only for traffic interested in a specific product or service, and although it may not mean immediate income, future conversions should provide a return on the CPL investment.
Those hosting the advertisements like the CPL advertising model because advertisers must pay regardless of whether a lead converts into a sale.

Considerations

The performance of a particular type of ad campaign will vary from website. What works for one publisher or advertiser may not be profitable for another. That is why testing and tweaking are important to ensuring your website is monetized according to its maximum potential.

- Bash Script: How read file line by line (best and worst way)

There are many-many way to read file in bash script, look at the first section where I used while loop along with pipe (|) (cat $FILE | while read line; do ... ) and also incremented the value of (i) inside the loop and at the end I am getting the wrong value of i, the main reason is that the usage of pipe (|) will create a new sub-shell to read the file and any operation you do withing this while loop (example - i++) will get lost when this sub-shell finishes the operation.

In second and the worst method, One of the most common errors when reading a file line by line is by using a for loop (for fileline in $(cat $FILE);do ..), which prints the every word in a file on separate line, because, for loop uses the default value of IFS (space).

In third perfect method, The while loop (while read line;do .... done < $FILE) is the most appropriate and easiest way to read a file line by line, see the example below.

This is sample file
This is normal text file

- Bash Script: Execute loop in background withing a script

Below is simple bash script which shows the way to make any loop execute in background, with this approach one can make the script to perform multiple things at the same time .... somewhat similar to multi threading.

In the example below, the '&' at the end of the first loop which makes this loop to go into background and at the same time second loop also gets started which makes both the loop to operate simultaneously.

Practical example: you can use above approach to copy some set of files to some other server or storage (backup) and at the same time you can perform the ftp job to copy other set of files to ftp server.

- Bash Script: Calculate the total time taken by script execution

There is a bash predefined parameter SECONDS

Each  time  this  parameter  is referenced, the number of seconds since shell invocation is returned.  If a value is assigned to SECONDS, the value returned upon subsequent references is the number of seconds since the assignment plus the value assigned.  If SECONDS is unset, it loses its special properties, even if it is subsequently reset.

Below is simple bash script which demonstrate the usage of SECOND parameter

Facebook can be an excellent way to drive traffic to your website. No matter the purpose, scope or intended audience of your website and any business associated with it, Facebook presents the opportunity not only for you to share content from the site directly with your friends or fans, but for others who see the content to share it with their own social networks with the click of a button.



Step 1

Create a Facebook fan page for the site if you haven't already done so. Sign in to Facebook and select "Create a Page" from the bottom of the screen, then choose a category -- and, if applicable -- a subcategory for your website. Choose "Get Started," then upload a profile photo and input profile details to launch your page. Click the "Invite Friends" link on the right side of the page, then choose members of your Facebook friend list whom you think would want to become fans of the page.

Step 2

Send out bulletins on other social networking sites -- LinkedIn and Twitter, for example -- promoting the page to solicit fans. Since someone need not be your Facebook friend in order to "Like" your page, any registered Facebook user who comes upon the page can become a fan.

Step 3

Post regular, high-quality content not only to the Facebook fan page, but also by cross-posting it to your own personal Facebook profile. Sending updates to both your personal and professional networks maximizes the potential traffic increases you get from Facebook.

Paste in the code and save the file. Now people who visit your website see a box that allows them to "Like" the page with a single click; this sends all updates you post to their news feeds, further maximizing the quantity of traffic you generate via Facebook.

A Search Engine Watch Forums thread asks how does one get their site indexed by Ask.com.
Typically, a search engine likes to pick up new URLs and pages via a normal web crawl. You can see at Ask.com's Webmasters page (a page that has grown to add more information over time) that Ask.com's crawlers go around the web from link to link, looking for new and important content.
Ask utilizes Web crawlers to collect raw data and gather information that is used in building our ever-expanding search index. Crawling ensures that the information in our results is as up-to-date and relevant as it can possibly be. Our crawlers are well designed and professionally operated, providing an invaluable service that is in accordance with search industry standards.
But in the past, you were able to do paid inclusion, that is no longer available. But as Ask.com says, they do want to find new pages during the normal crawl process.
As a result of some recent enhancements to Ask, we're confident that we're indexing even more Web pages than ever, and that your site should appear in our Search index as a result of our ongoing "crawling" of the Web for new and updated sites and content.
Also in the past you were able to submit your pages to url@askjeeves.co.uk or url@askjeeves.com to get included. An old 2003 thread from WebmasterWorld claimed that it worked in the past. Does it still work? I hope to find out and update this thread, but I highly doubt it.
Currently, the best way to get included is via nice topical and popular links. Then just be very very patient.

- Perl Script: Difference between local and my variables

'my' creates a new variable (but only within the scope it exists in), 'local' temporarily amends the value of a variable

ie, 'local' temporarily changes the value of the variable (or global variable), but only within the scope it exists in.

So with local you basically suspend the use of that global variable, and use a "local value" to work with it. So local creates a temporary scope for a temporary variable.

Submit Your Site For Free


The first step to getting your site online and to get better rankings in Google is to submit your URL to search engines. An example of an URL is www.yoursite.com. Eventually the search engines will find your site but this will help expedite the process.
Once you submit your URL, it could take several days, weeks, or months for the search engines to index your page(s). Results may vary so don’t write this in stone. Factors such as other websites pointing to your site can affect this time as well.

Submit your URL to Google:

1. Go to the following link: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
2. Type in your URL, example: http://www.yoursite.com
3. Enter comments about your site. This is optional. Usually I enter the genre of the site and a few keywords. Example: Website design in Hollister, CA.
4. Enter the captcha text shown in the box
5. Select “Add URL”

Submit your URL to Bing:

1. Go to the following link: http://www.bing.com/docs/submit.aspx
2. Enter the captcha text shown in the box
3. Type in your URL, example: http://www.yoursite.com
4. Select “Submit URL”

Submit your URL to Yahoo:

You will need to have an account with Yahoo. If you do not have an account you can create an account for free.
1. Go to the following link: http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit
2. Sign in using your yahoo ID and Password
3. Select “Submit a Website or Webpage”
4. Type in your URL, example: www.yoursite.com
5. Select “Submit URL”

Submit your Sitemap to Ask:

Ask does not have an URL submit feature, however, you can submit your sitemap to them.  Once your sitemap is completed, enter your sitemap location in the following URL and enter into your web browser.

That’s it! Once you complete the above steps, just sit back and be patient. It takes time for the search engines to index your pages. If you submit more than once, some search engines may consider this spamming which could result in not indexing your site at all.

Do Not Use an Automated Submission Program

Using an automated submission program to submit to multiple search engines at once may be considered spam attempts and is frowned upon by search engines such as Google.
Also note that you do not have to add all of your URL addresses for your entire site. For example, you do not need to add http://www.yoursite.com/about.hml and http://www.yoursite.com/contact.hml. Simply enter the home page URL and let the engines do the rest.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is more important than ever for getting your website noticed. You can take the chance that a crawler will stumble on your site, but why not improve your odds by submitting your site directly to search engines? Manually submitting your site to the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and Bing offers a few advantages: it ensures that the search engines will crawl your site, and can help your site get into an index faster. Think of it as moving your site to the front of the search line. Here’s how you do it.

Submitting Your Site to Google

To submit your site to the Google index, all you have to do is go to www.google.com/addurl/. Enter the URL for your home page into the appropriate box (including the http://), add any comments you might have about your site, and then click the Add URL button. That’s it! Google will now add your site to the Googlebot crawl list, and your site will appear in appropriate search results.

Note that you have to add only the top-level URL for your site; you don’t have to add URLs for any subsidiary pages. For example, if your home page is http://www.homepage.com/index.html, enter only http://www.homepage.com. Googlebot will crawl the rest of your site once it finds the main URL.

Submitting your website to Yahoo! is an equally simple process. Point your web browser to http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit/. Here you have the option of submitting the URL for a website or for a blog or website feed. You’ll probably use the former, although if your site has an RSS feed, you can achieve better ongoing results by submitting the URL of the feed instead.

Go to http://search.msn.com.sg/docs/submit.aspx and enter your entire site URL into the box (including the http://) and then click the Submit URL button. As with the Google and Yahoo! submission services, Live Search’s MSNBot crawler will be instructed to crawl your site and index all the internal pages linked from your home page.

Over the last fortnight or so, I’ve had some thrilling success on social bookmarking sites such as Digg and delicious, in articles that I’ve written for a few different blogs. Now, these posts weren’t written specifically to get Dugg, but I have learned a thing or two about writing a popular post, and why it matters to freelance blog writers.

Let’s take a little look today at why a freelance blog writer should care about writing popular posts:
It makes you valuable.
If you are writing freelance for a blog, you want to give them your very best content, and give their readers great value with your writing. But if you also write a post that does hugely well on Digg (for example), you’ve just given your employer something that’s not easily achievable. Sure, the big sites can make the front page of Digg nearly any day of the week, but trust me, they still care about it. And to medium and smaller blogs, those types of successful posts are pure gold.
Looks good on your resume.
Well, you probably won’t literally list your popular posts on your resume, but if you contact any potential employers to do some freelance writing, you can mention that you’ve had 12 popular posts on Digg in two months. They’ll hire you in a flash.
It’s a bit of a thrill.
To know that thousands of people like your article is like a validation that you’re a good writer. But if you are looking for validation, don’t read the comments on Digg. They’re pretty vicious.
Now, you should know that it’s not easy to get on the front-page of Digg, and it can take a bit of luck. Often you might write an article that you think will do well, but it doesn’t go anywhere. Other times you don’t expect an article to do anything, and it just takes off. It helps if another popular blog links to the article to get the ball rolling.
But given all of that, there are some things you can do to write an article with powerful potential to become popular:
  1. Write catchy headlines. This is the most important step of all. Headlines, more than anything else, will catch the eye of a potential Digger or deliciouser. Make them want to know more, want to read your article, and you’re halfway to getting a digg. The other half, of course, is the content, but they won’t read the content if the headline doesn’t grab their attention. Read some popular posts on Digg and delicious to find out the kind of headlines that do well. Most important: the headline should have some kind of benefit for the reader, should catch their attention, and should make them curious and want to know more. Don’t be afraid to be flashy when it comes to headlines — understated headlines don’t do well. And don’t be afraid to revise your headline several times — the original idea is rarely the best.
  2. Deliver the content. OK, you’ve got their attention with the headline. But if your content doesn’t give them exactly what the headline advertised, your readers will feel tricked. And then they will be angry. And anger is not usually the reader reaction you should go for if you’re looking for popularity. Your content should deliver exactly what you said you would give them, and be as well-written as possible.
  3. Be useful. Be extremely useful. Some of the most popular posts are the ones that teach the reader to do something they’ve always wanted to do, or that offer them a resource they can use often as a reference (that’s why they’ll bookmark it on delicious). Write a resource that is so useful that the reader will have no choice but to bookmark it. Lists of useful resources and links are always a good choice.
  4. Write about a hot topic. OK, this is pandering, but who among us hasn’t sold our souls yet. Just me? OK, then skip this step. But if you want to grab a reader’s attention, writing about Twitter a few weeks ago, or Tim Ferriss last week, or Ron Paul this week, or MySpace or You Tube or Google or Ubuntu or Macs in any given week, would be likely to catch some attention. Especially if you write something original or extremely useful about that topic.
  5. Write a great lead. The opening paragraph (or two), after the headline, is the most important part of the post. Write a lead that summarizes what you’re going to talk about in the article, and why the reader should care, and grabs their attention and pulls them into the rest of the article. That’s a lot to ask of one paragraph, but the best leads will accomplish this.
  6. Use lists. Sure, people get tired of seeing Top 10 lists, but if it’s a Top 10 list about something they’re interested in, they’ll read it anyway. And the great thing about lists is that they are well organized, and eminently scannable. A busy Digger or deliciouser can easily catch your main points without having to spend much time reading the whole post. Who has time to read every word?
  7. Be original. You can do all of the above and be exactly the same as a dozen other dugg posts. No one wants to read a duplicate of something they’ve read over and over before. Do something different, think of a way to give a new perspective or refreshing angle to an old post, add humor throughout the post. Make them leave the article saying, “Wow, this was pretty good. I should thank that awesome free-lance blog writer with a Digg!” (Again, if you want to believe that people are thinking this stuff about your article, don’t read the comments on Digg.)

facebook status - How to Add Grid Layout For the Popular Posts Widget

A few days back, I published the JavaScript version  of the Recent Posts widget, and I loved the Grid Layout of the Widget. One of the most popular Widgets used by Bloggers is Blogger’s Official Popular Post Widget. So I decided to edit the gadget, and give it the Grid Style.

How does the Gadget Look like after tweaking it?

So Here are the Steps to make your Popular Posts Widget act like an Image Grid

1. Go to the Layout Page and add the Popular Posts Gadget, if you haven’t already added it.

2. Edit the Gadget Settings so that it displays the Thumbnails and not the Snippet

3. Now Go to Template/Design > Edit HTML . DO NOT Click on the Expand Widget Templates checkbox. Leave it unchecked, and look for  PopularPosts1 (Do a Ctrl +F to find it in your template) and you will get some line like this

5. Save your Template
6. Now Go to Template Designer > Advanced > Add CSS and paste the following CSS snippet there, and apply to your Blog
.popular-posts .item-thumbnail{float:left;}
.popular-posts ul{padding-left:0px;}
.popular-posts ul li {list-style-image: none;list-style-type: none;display:inline;}
The image URL present in the Widget Code is the Default Thumbnail which will be displayed if the post doesn’t have a thumbnail associated with it. You can modify it to get a custom default thumbnail. You can spice up the CSS to make the grid look more eye catching. I would leave that to you :)

Reverting Back to the old one

If you are not satisfied by the way it looks, then revert it back. Here are the steps:
  1. Just Remove the Popular Posts Widget from the Layout Page.If you need the original version, then add it back again
  2. Remove the CSS which you added to Template Designer > Advanced > Add CSS
  3. That’s it.
