facebook status - Web Application Development Guidelines

The year 2010 was an excellent year for web applications and products as it saw the largest amount of funding for cloud-based applications yet. The trend has already shown to continue in 2011 and now more than ever, web applications are in high-demand.

Why the sudden demand?

A large part of the reason for the boom in cloud based startups and products is how far web technology has come in the last few years. With the advent of open APIs, social graphs, location based services and now mobile accessibility, many ideas that were not previously very difficult to execute are becoming not only possible, but also seem to come with low overheads and initial investment.

Points to focus on

Requirements & Planning
Web app planning research
At the heart of every application is its feature set. You simply can’t expect success by doing everything else right but not having a compelling feature set. This might seem like common sense but you would be surprised how many people don’ pay enough attention to this step.

Ensure that you have performed thorough market research to determine:
  • Is there a problem that exists which is being solved by your product?
  • Are there other players in this space (competitors)?
  • What platforms is your target market dominantly using? Do you need a cross-platform solution?
With this knowledge, you will be in a much better position to make decisions such as what servers to use, what kind of architecture needs to be developed and be able to perform competitor analysis to determine how to best approach your product with the aspirations to one-up everything else that may exist in the market.
Accessibility
Multi-Platform Web App
It is vital to know how many different platforms the application must be available on. This can vary from product to product because certain web applications are useless on anything other than a laptop or desktop computer (for example, a large CRM system like Salesforce would not be very useful on an iPhone for adding new leads and such) where as other products may need to be accessible on mobile phones on the go to augment the existing web product (such as Groupon which can allow you to view latest deals in areas near your location).

Inserting, updating and fetching information from the database is also something that would be done by all the platforms upon which the deployment were to take place. This would mean that it would be best to make a single API that can be accessed by all the different platforms. This helps reduce the workload and improves the re-usability of code as it essentially means that the different platforms would simply need a UI design unique to the dimensions of the platform. The API layer would be able to handle all the communication with the back-end system, which would not need to change.
User interface/experience
Web app wireframe
The interface can make or break a web product. With a tremendous amount of competition out there, the overall user experience must be very well thought out and attention given to detail to ensure that the product is user-friendly, intuitive and efficient.

While user-interface design is a creative art for the most part, there are elements of it which are downright scientific. How a person’s eyes are attracted by different colors, sizes and fonts are important to know. Knowing what to put above the fold and below the fold are concepts that need to be kept in mind as well as taking measures to avoid clutter. During this fine balancing act it is important to make sure that you are not slowing down the load times of your interface by using heavy scripts or intense animations to distract users.
Scalability
Web app scalability
One of the most challenging aspects of web applications development is creating applications that scale well. So what determines how well an application scales? For an average user session the following metrics must be determined:
  • Server CPU Usage – generally can be high if there queries that are not optimized and take up far too much processing in order to fetch the results.
  • Bandwidth Usage – this can increase overheads if each user session is taking up more bandwidth than it needs to.
  • Database read/writes – the amount of read/writes to the database increase overheads in general, as they are the main culprits of CPU usage.
  • Storage – the amount of data an average user stores will increase the overheads and needs to be optimized for obvious reasons.
Some ways in which optimization can be tackled are:
  • Database optimization – make sure your table structures are normalized appropriately based on the level of complexity of the project at hand.
  • Query optimization – database queries must be optimized to ensure that they are efficiently returning the required information. There are several ways to gather information from a database, and the most efficient method is not always the most obvious one.
  • Memcache – minimize the amount of reads/writes on the database by using a cache technology such as Memcache. Steps must be taken however to ensure that the user always sees the latest version of the data and not just what the cache has in store.
Reach
Share with friends
Ensuring that the application is accessible to as many people as possible is one thing, but taking steps to make sure that your application is visible to large audience is an entirely different and equally important aspect.

Using tools such as social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google+) and localization techniques to offer the product in various languages can go a long way in gaining global coverage for your product which can yield much higher volumes of traffic than previously anticipated.
Testing & Iterating
Application QA Testing
In web application development, the product must go through several iterations before it can be deemed ready for launch. This is because human behavior is very difficult to predict down to an absolute and thus web products require feedback and tweaks made upon said feedback several times over before it can leave the beta stage. This is why a closed-beta testing period is highly advisable.

Conclusion

Web applications may be in high demand right now and interest is peaking at an all-time high, but this doesn’t mean that everyone is tackling these projects efficiently. Developing a web-based product is a complex maze that needs to be navigated with precision & efficiency. It combines skill-sets from several different fields such as programming, art & user behavioral psychology to name a few.

facebook status - Understanding the Different Types of Visitor

Different Types of Website Visitors

It is important to understand the different visitor types and ensure your site caters to each one. This ensures you get the best result from each type.

In order to improve your website's performance, you need to understand the factors that influence the chance of a sale. This area of study is called conversion mechanics. Conversion mechanics is a branch of applied statistical analysis that looks at the different types of "visits" and the factors that influence a person to make a purchase or not. Not all visits are alike. Different types of visits are affected differently by a common set of factors, which means different types of visitors are affected in different ways by the same influences. This article explains the different types of visits and the factors that affect their chance of conversion.

Different types of visits

There are three types of visits:
1. Browsing visits are made by people who are just surfing the site for "infotainment." Such visitors are more heavily influenced by elements of design than other people because any purchase they make will be an impulse purchase.
2. Research visits are made by people who do not intend to purchase during the current visit; they just want product information. Some will have the intention of buying later and are doing research in order to make a more informed decision. These are called focused research visitors. These visitors are typically beginning or engaged in a repeat visit cycle and may be actively comparing sites. They are very focused on finding product information and are almost impervious to the effect of design features. The only design feature that can really affect them is navigation that makes it difficult for them to find the information they want.
People looking at car insurance sites for several months before their renewal is due are a typical example. They will purchase when their renewal is due, but not now. By contrast, background research visitors are simply interested in the product area in general and are seeking to increase their overall knowledge. Hobbyists are a typical example. While they also show repeat visit patterns, the time between visits is likely to be much greater than visitors doing research in order to buy. These people are closer to browsing visitors in terms of the factors that will influence them to purchase, as any purchase they make will be an impulse buy.
3. Focused visits are made by people who intend to make a purchase on this visit. On most sites, the majority of these people will be repeat visitors coming directly to the site. After them, the next largest group will be people who found the site via a targeted search in a search engine. The cost and nature of the product directly influences the proportions of these two. The more expensive a product is, and the greater the impact it will have on the purchaser's life, the more likely the purchaser is to be a repeat visitor. People rarely take out loans on their first visit to a site because of the cost and length of the commitment. This person is likely to have visited the site before as a research visitor.
Most visitors start out as browsers or researchers, only becoming focused visitors on their final purchase visit. They then lapse back to browser or researcher until their next purchase, unless you lose them for good.

Understanding what makes people buy online

Conversion mechanics is about mathematically understanding the factors that are involved when someone converts and the relationship between those factors. These factors are the forces that influence the visitor's decision. Some of them increase the chance of a purchase, while others decrease it. There are four main factors involved in any visitor's decision to convert:
  1. The baseline purchase probability is the initial chance that the visitor will purchase on any given visit. This is closely connected with the type of visit. Someone who is just browsing is much less likely to purchase than someone who has come to the store with the specific intention of purchasing. Baseline purchase probability is also affected by the cost of the product and shipping costs. Dollar-for-dollar shipping costs have a greater negative impact than the product's price. Previous purchase experiences also affect the baseline purchase probability.
  2. The visit effect represents the impact visiting the site has on the decision to purchase. Positive visit effects, such as clear images, increase the chance of a sale, while negative visit effects, such as poor navigation, decrease the chance of a sale. Not only does each visit have its own effect, multiple visits create an accumulated effect.
  3. The purchase effect refers to the experience the shopper had after previous purchases. Purchasing effects can have a positive or negative impact. For example, failing to deliver the product severely reduces the chance of a repeat purchase, whereas swift delivery increases the chance.
  4. The purchase threshold represents the customer's resistance to purchasing. Once the combined conversion effects listed above exceed the purchase threshold, the visitor decides to purchase.
These factors can influence each other in different ways. Which factors are most important -- and their relative weights -- change according to the type of visit. The impact of these effects also changes over time, so it is important to understand not just how these factors are working now, but what they have been in the past and, most important of all, what trends indicate about the future.

The baseline purchase probability for focused visits will be high relative to the visit effect. The purchasing effect is likely to be low if negative, and high if positive.

If someone has had a negative purchasing experience from your site, they are simply less likely to visit the site again at all. If they do make a focused visit to your site after a negative purchase experience, that experience wasn't very important to them, and the importance of that negative experience is relatively low.
By contrast, research visitors will have low baseline purchase probabilities and purchase effects, but the visit effect will be high. Browsing visitors have similarly low baseline purchase probabilities, while the visit effect can vary strongly from visit to visit and thus result in some occasional impulse buying.

The most important effect is that of the visit. The visit effect directly reflects the quality of the website and is the area where you have the greatest influence. You need to know what percentage of your sales occurred on the first visit versus what percentage of sales comes from repeat visitors. Most sites find that the majority of their sales go to repeat visitors. Amazon, for example, does not break even on a new customer until the third purchase.

You also need to understand the cumulative effect of repeat visits. Does the chance of buying increase or decrease the more visits someone makes to your site?
As people become familiar with the site, the effect it has on them will change. For example, design features are more important for initial visits than subsequent ones because the visitor becomes familiar with them. On the other hand, this familiarity means that elements that do not fit the familiar pattern have a greater effect in later visits than in early ones.

When it comes to the cumulative effect of visits, not all visits are equal. Some visits will have a greater or lesser effect than others. This is influenced by a number of factors, such as the nature of the visit (browsing visits have less impact than others), the time since the last visit, total visits already made, the effect of the last visit and the accumulated visit effect.

A very important and often overlooked component of the visit effect is known as the utility of connection. Utility of connection looks at the relationship between the content being served and the connection this content is traveling through. Primarily this is about how long it took to render a functional page (which has enough to use) and then the complete page.

Utility of connection is actually decreasing for a large portion of the web's users. This is because there is a general assumption in design circles that everyone has broadband. In actual fact, in the U.S. (and most of Europe), around 40 percent of internet users are still on dial-up.
The chance of getting further sales out of an existing customer is most strongly influenced by how well you delivered the product to them. Problems with delivery do not automatically have a negative effect. A delivery problem can lead to a positive effect if your customer service response is above average. Sorting out a customer's problems in a manner that shows you care and that the customer is important to you can have a more positive effect than simply delivering smoothly.

The purchase effect accumulates with multiple purchases. In other words, customers form an overall impression based on their accumulated experience of multiple purchases. The more purchases they make, the less effect each individual purchase has.
It is important to understand the relative size of the purchase threshold and the factors of which it is composed. Companies often underestimate the resistance potential customers have. The main purpose of the site's content is to address and overcome the factors that make up the purchasing threshold. Successful sites are created by a process of consciously identifying and addressing each element of the visitor's purchase threshold.

The factors making up the purchase threshold are not just intellectual but also emotional. People require information, but they also require motivation. No matter how much product information you provide them with, the actual decision to purchase is always an emotional one.
It is important to understand the different visitor types and ensure your site caters to each one. You need to understand how the different conversion factors are combining on your site for each of the visit types. The math used to put these considerations together can be as simple or as complex as you like, but you need to do the work.

- Personal Full Text Search UI Application - Recoll

Recoll is a full text search application. Full text search applications let you find your data by content rather than by external attributes (like a file name). More specifically, they will let you specify words (terms) that should or should not appear in the text you are looking for, and return a list of matching documents, ordered so that the most relevant documents will appear first.

You do not need to remember in what file or email message you stored a given piece of information. You just ask for related terms, and Recoll will return a list of documents where those terms are prominent, in a similar way to Internet search engines.

Recoll uses the Xapian information retrieval library as its storage and retrieval engine. Xapian is a very mature package using a sophisticated probabilistic ranking model. Recoll provides the mechanisms and interface to get data into and out of the system.

facebook status - Learn How To Design An App And Start Generating Passive Income Right Away

Guide for designing a App:

Many people wonder how to design an app and historically it has been a very complicated process. Traditionally, apps could only be created by developers and software coders that have deep technical knowledge.

This has completely changed now and the average computer user can now create their own app in a short space of time and get it live on iTunes.

There are many different types of apps and they have changed the way that people interact with their handsets. The mobile phone has now become a central tool to organise your social life, work outside the office, and play games and now you can tap into this lucrative market and learn how to design an app.

There are different ways to earn money from apps, they include charging the user to download the app. This works well but will give you a one-time revenue when in fact you're looking for regular recurring revenue.

The most popular regular revenue stream from apps is to have advertising within the app itself. Companies will pay up to £9 for every time the advert is clicked and you can now discover how to design an app and make this kind of money.

There are many different programmes out there that will teach you how to design an app. They will range in their quality but you need to ensure that the programme you choose has clear step by step instructions and will result in a finished app by the end of the course. The best course will show how you market it within the online store and how you should price the app. If you've ever had the thought " I wish there was an app for...." you can now turn that thought into a reality and start to earn huge amounts of revenue regularly. If you get your app in the top 100 on iTunes you can earn anything from $500-$10,000 every single day. Some of the most popular apps including Angrybirds and Smurfs, have generated tens of millions for the developers.

The best course that describes how to design an app will teach even the most basic computer user how to turn that idea into a reality. You do not need IT skills and there will be no coding. Just very straightforward instructions. You do not need to create a highly complicated app to generate huge income. Some of the simplest apps out there are ones that generate the most income for the creators. It could be an app that has one single function and nothing else. It will still earn you money and if you give it away for free and then have "in app" advertising it can return large profits.

The best thing that you will discover when you learn how design an app is that once you have finished it and made it live, you can sit back and watch the revenue come in. In two short weeks your product is ready and then after that it will generate daily income. You do not need to market it actively because you are riding on the most popular platform which gives you the best exposure there is right now. After that, you can then move onto the next product straightaway whilst you earn.

Don't waste any time, learn how to design an app and start earning income by the end of the month!

facebook status - Web Application Development – A Guide to Success

From the good old days of the <BLINK> tag, to the XML-savvy Web services of today, applied Internet language has come a long way. And nowhere is this more evident than in the field of Web application development.
As the Internet grew into a major player on the global economic front, so did the number of investors who were interested in its development. So, you may wonder, how does the Internet continue to play a major role in communications, media and news? The key words are: Web Application Projects.
Web applications are business strategies and policies implemented on the Web through the use of User, Business and Data services. These tools are where the future lies. In this article, I’ll take you through the essential phases in the life cycle of a Web application project, explain what options you have, and help you formulate a plan for successful Web application endeavors of your own. First, though, let’s take a brief overview of Web applications.
Who Needs Web Applications and Why?
There are many entities that require applications for the Web-one example would be Business-to-Business interaction. Many companies in the world today demand to do business with each other over secure and private networks. This process is becoming increasingly popular with a lot of overseas companies who outsource projects to each other. From the simple process of transferring funds into a bank account, to deploying a large scale Web services network that updates pricing information globally, the adoption of a Web applications infrastructure is vital for many businesses.
The Web Application Model
The Web application model, like many software development models, is constructed upon 3 tiers: User Services, Business Services and Data Services. This model breaks an application into a network of consumers and suppliers of services.

The User Service tier creates a visual gateway for the consumer to interact with the application. This can range from basic HTML and DHTML to complex COM components and Java applets.
The user services then grab business logic and procedures from the Business Services. This tier can range from Web scripting in ASP/PHP/JSP to server side programming such as TCL, CORBA and PERL, that allows the user to perform complex actions through a Web interface.

The final tier is the Data Service layer. Data services store, retrieve and update information at a high level. Databases, file systems, and writeable media are all examples of Data storage and retrieval devices. For Web applications, however, databases are most practical. Databases allow developers to store, retrieve, add to, and update categorical information in a systematic and organized fashion.
Choosing the Right Project
Choosing the right types of projects to work on is an extremely important part of the Web application development plan.
Assessing your resources, technical skills, and publishing capabilities should be your first goal. Taking the 3 tiers into consideration, devise a list of all available resources that can be categorically assigned to each tier.
The next consideration should be the cost. Do you have a budget with which to complete this project? How much will it cost you to design, develop and deliver a complete project with a fair amount of success? These are questions that should be answered before you sign any deals or contracts.
Let’s look at an example. A company called ABC needs to develop a Web application that will display sales information created by different sales agents. The data is updated daily through a completely automated process from all 3 service tiers. The client tells you that this entire project must be done in ASP/SQL server and that you should host the application as well.
After assessing all your resources, you and your team come to a conclusion that the company is unable to do data backups on a daily basis. After further discussion, you realize that this is a very important part of the setup for your client, and you should not risk taking a chance with the project. It’s very likely that you will be more prepared next time around, when a similar project lands on your desk, so you decline the job and recommend someone else who has the capabilities to do it right now.
The Phases in a Web Application Project
The Web application development process has 4 phases:
  1. Envisioning the nature and direction of the project
  2. Devising the plan
  3. Development
  4. Testing, support and stability
Let’s look at each of these in more detail.
1. Envisioning the nature and direction of the project
In this phase, the management and developers assigned to the project come together and establish the goals that the solution must achieve. This includes recognizing the limitations that are placed on the project, scheduling, and versioning of the application. By the end of this phase, there should be clear documentation on what the application will achieve.
2. Devising the plan
In this phase, you and your team must determine the "how’s" of the application.
What scripting language is most appropriate, which features must be included, and how long will it take? These are some of the questions that must be answered through this planning phase. The main tangents at this point are the project plan and functional specification. The project plan determines a timeframe of events and tasks, while the functional specification outlines in detail how the application will function and flow.
3. Development
Once the project plan and functional specification are ready, a baseline is set for the development work to begin. The programmer/s or Web developer/s begin coding, testing and publishing data. This phase establishes the data variables, entities and coding procedures that will be used throughout the remainder of the project. A milestone document is prepared by the development team, which is then handed to management for review.
4. Testing, support and stability
The stability phase of the application project mainly focuses on testing and the removal of bugs, discrepancies and network issues that may otherwise cause the application to fail. It is here that policies and procedures are established for a successful support system.
Knowing Your Options and Using them Wisely
Ok, now that you have an understanding of the architecture and procedures behind Web application development, let’s look at what technical options you’ll need to consider for the development process itself.
Windows Web Servers
Microsoft has built a loyal customer base on one important factor – their easy-to-use software. Windows NT/2000/XP Web servers are very fast and easy to administer. The fact that the operating system is a Windows shell means that administrators and authors can easily allow the Web server to interact with other software and hardware applications to transmit and receive data over the Internet. Popular server side scripting languages used with Windows servers are ASP/ASP. net, Java Server Pages, and PHP.
UNIX/Linux Web Servers
UNIX has long been known for its reliability. It is a powerful and robust Web server and operating system. Unix is the server of choice for many large-scale Websites that need content management systems or receive an extremely high volume of traffic. Popular server side scripting languages for UNIX are Java Server Pages, PERL, PHP, and CORBA
Every scripting language has its pros and cons. As I’m not writing a book here, I’ll use the ASP model as my language of illustration. When working with Windows servers, there are several important parameters that the developer needs to throw into the equation, including security, scalability, speed and application design. So below I’m going to help you formulate a successful plan to accomplish all kinds of Web projects.
Planning for a Successful Web Development Project
In order to drastically minimize the risk of project failure, I’ve always approached my application development projects in the following sequence.
1. Identify business logic and entities
Start by gathering information on everything you have. If you are going to be working with databases, begin by enumerating how many entities will be used in the business logic. For example, if your program implements sales data, a sales ticket would be an entity.
Once you’ve identified all your entities, establish a clear guideline for their relationships. This can be done via presentations, flowcharts or even reports.
2. Create a functional specification and project plan
This part, in my opinion, is the most important part of the project. Functional specifications (or functional specs) are a map, or blueprint for how you want a particular Web application to look and work. The spec details what the finished product will do, user interaction, and its look and feel.
An advantage of writing a functional spec is that it streamlines the development process. It takes discrepancies and guesswork out of the programming process, because the level of detail that goes into the plan makes it possible to minimize the misunderstanding that’s usually associated with project mishaps. See examples of well written functional specs at RayComm.com.
Once the functional spec is finished, a project plan must be devised. A project plan is a timeline of tasks and events that will take place during the project. The project or program manager is normally the person who creates a project plan, and their primary focus is to detail task notes while being able to accommodate scheduling and resource information. You can download a sample Excel file for a project plan at Method123.com.
3. Bring the application model into play
As discussed earlier, the application model consists of 3 tiers – The User, Business and Data service tiers, each of which serves a substantial purpose.
Practically speaking, it’s always best to start with the data tier, because you’ve already identified your entities and understand their relationships. The data tier can be an SQL server database, a text file, or even the powerful and robust Oracle. Create tables, relationships, jobs, and procedures depending on what platform you have chosen. If the data is a warehouse (i.e. the data already exists and does not depend on real time interaction), then make sure that new and additional data can be added securely and in a scalable fashion.
A quick tip: using views in SQL server/Oracle can improve dramatically the productivity and performance of your application. They increase speed because they are "stored queries" that don’t have a physical existence.
The Business services tier, in my opinion, is the heart of the application. It involves the implementation of business logic into the scripting or programming language.
At this stage, make sure you’ve already set up your environment for testing and debugging. Always test on at least 2 instances in your application, after all, what may work perfectly for you, may not do so well on other platforms or machines. ASP, XML, PHP, JSP and CGI are some examples of server side scripting languages used at the business service level. Whichever language you choose, make sure that it’s capable of handling all the business logic presented in the functional specification.
The last is the user tier, which is absolutely vital for the interactive and strategic elements in the application. It provides the user with a visual gateway to the business service by placing images, icons, graphics and layout elements in strategic areas of interest, most commonly, based on management research. If you’ll be developing the user tier yourself, be sure to have studied your competition. The last thing you need is for your application to look exactly the same as someone else’s.
4. Develop a support scheme
Being able to support and stabilize your application is very important. Define a procedure call for cases of failure, mishaps or even downtime. Give your customers the ability to contact you in the case of an emergency relating to the program.
A good example of a support scheme is a ticket tracking system. This system allows users to file cases pertaining to a support request and the support team, then makes the case track able. This means that the request is identifiable by a unique code or number. Although ticket-tracking systems are normally used by hosting companies or large scale ASP’s (Application Service Providers), they still serve a valuable purpose in helping keep the application stable.
Over to You…
So there you have it – a framework from which you can begin to plan and develop your own successful Web applications.
Web applications will be around for a long time to come. As we move further on into the future, they will become less manual and more automated. This will eventually lead to new kinds of research, but for now, we can be happy with the fact that it is this that drives the Web.

- How to Install / Configure PostgreSQL Under Ubuntu Linux

PostgreSQL, often simply Postgres, is an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) available for many platforms including Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, MS Windows and Mac OS X. It is released under the PostgreSQL License, which is an MIT-style license, and is thus free and open source software. PostgreSQL is developed by the PostgreSQL Global Development Group, consisting of a handful of community volunteers employed and supervised by companies such as Red Hat.

It implements the majority of the SQL:2008 standard, is ACID-compliant, is fully transactional (including all DDL statements), has extensible data types, operators, and indexes, and has a large number of extensions written by third parties.

facebook status - 5 Money Making, Recession Resistant Home Businesses

Ideas for Starting a Successful Business in a Down Economy

In a recession, or in other times when the economy is lagging and jobs are being lost, most people consider it to be a very poor time to start thinking about starting a home business. However, tough economic times can also present great money making opportunities to those who prepare and are willing to take a chance on being successful.
Starting a home business in the midst of a recession may seem scary, but not having a backup plan in case you should suddenly lose your job can be even more scary.
Here are 5 relatively recession resistant, money making home business ideas to consider.

1. Internet Marketing Services

Internet marketing services are in high demand in an industry that is growing by leaps and bounds. Anyone who has an online business presence needs to know how best to effectively market their website on the Internet and most will consult an Internet marketing firm for assistance. That's where the independent Internet marketing specialist comes in.
As small business owners look for ways to build traffic and increase sales in a tough economy, a knowledgeable Internet marketer can help them gain a strong return on investment using very cost efficient means, which makes this a potentially recession resistant business you should include with any money making ideas you might be considering.

2. Medical Billing

A medical billing career could be very promising, either as a home business or a work from home medical billing job. Medical billing and coding lends itself well to working at home, and many in the medical billing and coding profession have been able to do just that, either by setting up a home business and working for themselves with independent physicians as their clients, or by working from home in medical billing jobs with larger health care firms that make and track medical billing work assignments electronically.
In a tough economy, medical providers still need to handle their billing and health care is generally seen as an industry that's highly resistant to recession and has strong money making potential.

3. Home Staging Home Business

If you have an eye for interior decorating and want to run your own money making home business,a home staging business can provide a great, low-cost start up opportunity for you and it's a great home business to start part-time on weekends while you're still employed.
A recession or down economy can often mean a real estate market flooded with homes for sale, including homes held by banks and mortgage companies in foreclosure. A home stager can show clients how to make their homes stand out from the competition and get it sold more quickly. Real estate agents and home lenders may also be fruitful contacts for anyone engaged in this type of recession resistant home business.

4. eBay Trading Assistant

eBay Trading Assistants help people sell their items on eBay. eBay Trading Assistants who operate a home business typically go out to client's homes or businesses to photograph and pick up items and then sell them on eBay on consignment, with the Trading Assistant handling all of the details of the sale and collecting a commission once the item is sold.
In a recession, people are looking for money making ideas to help pay bills. Selling unused and unwanted items on eBay is one way to that. However, not everyone knows how or wants to put forth the effort to sell the times themselves, so making money on eBay as a Trading Assistant could be a very lucrative recession resistant business in hard times.

5. Virtual Assistant

The Virtual Assistant (VA) industry is growing fast and becoming a popular for those who want to run their own home business to get started - usually by doing the things they have done well in the past for prior employers.
As businesses attempt to cut costs and lay off workers in a down economy, they may decide to outsource some office functions in order to save money. Additionally, for small business owners who are trying to pull in extra business during down times, hiring a virtual assistant can allow them to focus on more profitable activities. A virtual assistant business can be a low cost, recession resistant, money making business that just might keep you very busy and help get you through hard times.

facebook status - Real Ways to Make Money Working from Home

Most of those “work from home” opportunities that you see on TV, in the newspaper, or online are scams or pay you so little for the time you’ve invested that it’s not worth your while.  In my quest to figure out a way to ditch the 9 to 5 job so that I could work from the comfort of my own home, I have come across many different opportunities.  Whether you want to work from home so that you have more time with your kids or because you’d rather wear your jammies instead of a suit, the following are some great ideas on how to earn your living by working from home.  I can’t promise you’ll get rich overnight or quickly earn enough to replace your salary, or that it will even be easy, but if you stick with it and keep trying you’ll eventually have achieved your goal.

Start your own website.

There are two kinds of websites – the ones that sell products and the ones that provide information.
If you can think of a good idea for a webstore and invest enough time and energy into marketing it, you might do well.  But keep in mind, you will have to constantly keep at it.  There will be orders to fill and plenty of accounting and inventory work to keep you busy,  provided you have a good product, there’s demand, and you’ve marketed yourself well.  The “If you build it they will come” slogan does not apply to websites.  If no one knows you’re out there, the chances of them accidentally stumbling upon it are virtually nil.  It can also be expensive if you don’t know how to create or operate your website, or how to market it.  You may very likely need to enlist the help of paid professionals.

If the idea of running an online store does not appeal to you, perhaps you’d like to create a website that offers information, rather than products.  It could be that you make brilliant cartoons and think that would get a following, or perhaps you’d like to start up a news blog or maybe even a site for dog owners.  There’s no limit as to what topics you have to choose from, but my advice is to choose something that you love.

My experience:

I started up a news website along with my husband in 2006.  We are both news junkies who love to write.  I always wanted to be a journalist,  but I knew where that career field was heading and I didn’t really want to be an intern or do time as the obituary writer.  So we took our passion for news and for writing and our love for our hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, and we started up a news site.
I can’t say that we’ve gotten rich off of it,  but it helps pay the bills.  It’s daily traffic rivals and surpasses that of established news media outlets in our market, and we’ve brought on board some award-winning journalists in recent years.  It’s also gotten us other opportunities over the years, such as press passes to concerts and sporting events, chances to test out new products or listen to unreleased CDs, and so on.
We’ve stuck with it for so long because it is something that we enjoy.  I can’t stress this enough – if you start a website about something that you are not passionate about, chances are you will burn out pretty quickly.  It takes a lot of work to build up a successful website, and you have to be willing to put in the time yourself until it is big enough that you need to bring in some extra help.
We’ve saved a lot of costs because I know how to build websites and have a background in graphic design and a bit of SEO know-how. If you don’t have these skills, or a friend who might be willing to lend some of their talent, it will end up costing you more.

Answer questions, do surveys, and conduct searches.

This tactic to making money online will most definitely not make you rich, but can help you earn enough to pay for the little things you’d be buying anyways, or give you some extra spending money to treat yourself every once in awhile.
There are plenty of opportunities to take surveys for money.  This has never appealed to me, so I can’t honestly direct you to a legit one.  They’re out there, but do your research first.  Otherwise you might just find yourself added to another spam distribution list.
If you’re good at searching for information online and have an interest in a wide variety of topics, becoming a ChaCha.com guide might be up your alley.  People ask questions, you find them the answers, and then you get paid.  The more time you spend working, the more you will make.
If you use the internet, you probably use a search engine regularly.  Well what if all those searches you conducted could earn you money?  With SwagBucks.com, you can earn money for your searches.  It pays you to do what you’d already be doing on Google, Yahoo, Bing or whatever your favorite search engine is. You again won’t get rich by doing this, but you can build up enough points to score gift cards to Amazon.com and other places.
My experience:
I did a few surveys for AOL way back in the day that they paid me for, but these kind of things haven’t interested me all that much because they don’t pay out all that well and I’m more interested in making a living online than earning some extra spending money.  But I know people who have done these and are pleased with it.

Find a work from home job.

They are out there, but they’re hard to find and pretty darn competitive.  These jobs can range from a medical transcriptionist to a search engine optimization specialist.  Or, perhaps, you could find a position as a social media consultant.
My experience:
I’ve seen these from time to time posted on Craigslist, but I’ve never actually gotten one yet.  My advice to finding them is to scour the job postings on not only your local city, but some big cities like New York as well.  Often times there will be work from home jobs posted on only the NYC Craigslist because that’s where the company is based out of, that’s their local Craigslist, and they don’t want to go to the bother of posting it on all of the cities.   You’d apply for these jobs the same way you’d do any other job, and your interview will likely be over the phone, unless you happen to be near where the company is based.

Write about what you know.

Do you have a degree in nutrition?  I know Livestrong.com is hiring writers for their site through Demand Media Studios.  DMS also hiring writers and editors for every other topic under the sun to be published on eHow.com and their numerous other web properties.  You can make about $15 or more per article, and a few dollars for each article that you edit.  You can work as much or as little as you want.  Once you “claim” an assignment, of which there are tens of thousands, you have 7 days to complete it.
Yahoo bought up Associated Content and have amassed their own army of writers to create articles on numerous topics.  They also utilize their writers to do local feature stories for Yahoo Local cities.  They work similarly to Demand Media Studios, in that you can “claim” assignments.  I signed up to see how it worked, and it seems as though most of the payment for them is “performance based”.  In other words, you get paid based on the number of hits your article gets.
Scour the blogger job postings on ProBlogger.net.  There are lots of people hiring everyday for people to write blogs for them on numerous topics.
My experience:
I signed up with Demand Media Studios and was accepted, but I haven’t done much since. The number of assignments available and is somewhat overwhelming, but I could easily earn the equivalent of a 9 to 5 salary by writing articles every day.  I’ve written for many, many blogs and websites over the years about everything from lawncare to nursing school and mobile phones.  There are topics, such as new technology, that I consider myself to be well-versed in and there are others that I am not that familiar with, so I do a lot of research to write well about them.

Turn your talent into cash.

Most people have at least one talent.  Figure out what yours is, and come up with a plan to capitalize on it. This is what finding a work from home job is all about.  If you love to knit, why not sell your goods on Etsy?  Are you an awesome coder?  There’s more work out there than you’ll know what to do with.  Are you an expert gardener?  Start a blog and share your tips, or maybe even make some expert how-to videos for eHow.com.
You don’t have to quit your job and start working from home overnight.  It will likely take you some time to progress to a full work from home job, so start out small and work your way up.  If what you do is something that you love you’ll be more successful.  You need to be dedicated and motivated, and not easily distracted by the freedoms that working from home offers.  Successfully earning a living by working at home CAN be done, but it will most certainly take a lot of hard work.

- UI Application for Alternatives Configuration - Galternatives

update-alternatives creates, removes, maintains and  displays  information  about  the symbolic links comprising the Debian/Ubuntu alternatives system.

It is possible for several programs  fulfilling  the  same  or  similar functions  to  be  installed  on a single system at the same time.  For example, many systems have several  text  editors  installed  at  once. This gives choice to the users of a system, allowing each to use a different editor, if desired, but makes it difficult for a program to make a  good  choice for an editor to invoke if the user has not specified a particular preference.

Debian's alternatives system aims to solve  this  problem. A  generic name in the filesystem is shared by all files providing interchangeable functionality. The alternatives system and  the  system  administrator together  determine  which  actual  file  is referenced by this generic name.

For example, if the browsers like Chrome, Firefox and Opera are installed on the system, the alternatives system will cause the generic name /usr/bin/x-www-browser to refer to /usr/bin/google-chrome by  default.  The  system administrator  can  override  this and cause it to refer to /usr/bin/firefox instead, and the alternatives system will not alter this setting  until explicitly requested to do so.

facebook status - How eBay Working

If you are clueless about how the online auction giant - eBay works, this article will be a revelation. Read to know all about how eBay works for buyers and sellers.

While online auction is no longer a novelty, it indeed was when it was introduced as an idea in 1995. The website which started it all and still remains the premier online auction site all over the world is eBay. People new to online auctioning keep inquiring about how eBay works. Through this article, my aim is to provide a short introduction to working of eBay auctions and direct sales from the perspective of buyers and sellers.
How eBay Got Started

Before we go into the details of how eBay bidding works for sellers and buyers, let me recount eBay history briefly. With a listed revenue of $8.727 billion in 2009, eBay is the most visited online auction website ever. eBay was officially launched in September 3, 1995 by Pierre Omidyar in San Jose, California. At that time eBay was known as 'Auctionweb'. The very first item ever auctioned or bought on eBay was a broken laser pointer! The site was rechristened as 'eBay' in September, 1997.

From a mere 30 employees in 1998, with a revenue of $4.7 million, eBay has grown today to be the premier online auction site operating in 30 countries worldwide, employing 15,500 people and earning revenues that have gone beyond 8 billion dollars! It remains to be one of the best Dotcom success stories ever.

For Sellers

Let us first see how eBay bidding works from the seller's perspective. Any seller must first open an account with eBay to be able to sell items. A PayPal account will also be necessary to make reception of payments possible. Checking out the best selling items on eBay will provide you an idea about how items are marketed and sold on eBay.

To list an item, you must provide all the relevant information describing it. There is a fixed fee for listing items on eBay which you must pay for every item you list in there. You may also upload a photo of the selling item for free. There are two ways of selling an item on eBay. You can either sell an item in the auction format or through the 'Buy Now'.

If you want to use the latter option of direct sale, you have to pay extra fees. If you plan to sell through an eBay auction format, you need to set the starting base price and the time frame for which the auction will go on. You hold complete responsibility for the sale of the item and need to answer any queries put forward by the buyers. Specify shipping cost details in the product information.

Once the auction ends, you must sell the item to the highest bidder. The buyer who wins the bidding will be informed about it by eBay and will be asked to pay you for the item, via PayPal. On receiving payment, you must ship the item to the buyer and then provide feedback about the transaction. This feedback helps create the 'positive' reputation for the buyer on eBay. The website earns money by working as an intermediary to bring the buyer and seller together.

For Buyers

Now, let us take a look at the other side of the eBay auction and see how eBay works for buyers. A buyer also needs an eBay account. So if you want to participate in any of the online auctions on eBay, get registered as a buyer. You can make a category wise search of the items you would like to buy. If you are interested in buying any item put for auction, sign in to your account and place your bid. You may inquire about the item directly with the buyer and get your doubts cleared out.
The bidder must remember that once you put in your bid, you are in a binding contract to buy the item, if you win the auction. Once the stipulated time for which the auction lasts, is over, the buyer with the highest bid is informed about it. He must pay the seller using PayPal or any other such service allowed by eBay. The buyer must then provide feedback to the seller which helps in improving his rating on the site.
