facebook status - iOS Web traffic share surpasses Mac OS for first time ever

Following Apple’s blowout December quarter during which it shipped a record 37 million iPhone handsets and 15.4 million iPad tablets, a significant shift has taken place. iOS’s share of U.S. Web traffic as observed during a six-month study conducted by leading ad network Chitika has surpassed Apple’s Mac OS Web traffic share for the first time.
Chitika monitored traffic across its network between mid-August 2011 and early February, and compared the volume from Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices to traffic from Mac computers. The study covered hundreds of millions of ad impressions and it used user agent data to determine Web traffic share for each platform. According to Chitika’s data, iOS’s Web traffic share finally topped Mac OS earlier this month.
“The data shows that the web market shares of iOS and OS X have been converging steadily since August,” Chitika’s Gabe Donnini noted in the firm’s report. ”iOS has been posting regular gains, and has experienced an overall growth of nearly 50%, whereas OS X has seen its market share decline by 25% since a high point in September. February marks the first point where a reversal in position can be seen in the respective operating systems. iOS passes Mac OS with 8.15% of all web traffic, whereas Mac OS only sees 7.96%.”
The trend observed by Chitika is likely to continue, and the disparity between iOS Web traffic and Mac OS traffic will almost certainly grow. Apple’s MacBook line of notebook computers saw growth recently that outpaced the rest of the PC industry, but the growth in Apple’s PC division pales in comparison to its mobile devices.
The proliferation of iOS devices around the world is expected to continue as Apple releases its iPad 3 early next month and a completely redesigned next-generation iPhone later this year.

facebook status - HOW TO: Create Your Own Customized Short URL and Increse TRafic with Custom URL

The Better Profiles Series is supported by Gillette. Learn more about Gillette and its products at Gillette.com.
http ImageWhile the rest of us were copy-and-pasting mumbo-jumbo from URL shorteners into our Twitter accounts, sites like The New York Times were smugly tweeting their links using shortened URLs like “nyt.ms.” Frankly, this made us a little jealous.
But now, Bit.ly makes it easy for the average Joe Blogger to create a custom short URL for free. You don’t even need to own a site that gets about 17 million unique visitors per month.
A custom shortened link is great for building a personal or business brand, as readers know exactly where it will lead when they see it shared on social networks. With these four easy steps, you can customize short links for your site and share branded URLs across the web using Bit.ly Pro.

1. Buy a URL — Make it Short

Domainr
There are a number of services you can use to find an available URL, but the most convenient for finding a short URL is Domainr. If you type in the word you want to include in your short URL, this site will provide the different ways you might assemble it with a variety of domains. It also lets you know which of these options is available for purchase.
Your URL will need to be fewer than 15 characters in order to work with Bit.ly Pro. Once you’ve picked one out, purchase it using a site like GoDaddy.com or Domain.com.

2. Register for Bit.ly Pro

Bit.ly
It is free to sign up for a Bit.ly Pro Beta account. With the account, you’ll be able to set up your customized short URL and view statistics on the customized short links that you create. Bit.ly will take as long as a week to approve your registration. Hang in there.

3. Set an A Record for Your Short URL to Point to Bit.ly

A Record
Log into your domain name registrar and set the A record, or DNS host, for your short URL to point to bit.ly’s IP address (at GoDaddy, the A record is located under the “Total DNS” tab). Bit.ly’s IP address is 168.143.174.97.

4. Verify Your Long Domain

shortenedURL
Enter the domain name you want to track (your site’s long domain) in your Bit.ly Pro account. This domain should not be the same as the short URL that you just set up. After you verify that you own the URL, bit.ly will automatically convert any links you shorten from that site to your custom short URL.

Share Your Custom Links

Once all of your virtual wires are connected, any URLs from your long domain will be custom-shortened, provided that you are logged into your Bit.ly account. This set up will not customize links to your site that others are sharing. That functionality, as seen with The New York Times, is only available at an enterprise-level Bit.ly partnership. When you reach those 17 million uniques per month, let us know, and we’ll show you how to get that rolling.

- Cross-platform files Sharing application - NitroShare

NitroShare makes it easy to transfer files from one machine to another on the same network. Most of the time, no configuration is necessary - all of the machines on your network running NitroShare should immediately find each other and you can instantly begin sharing files.

NitroShare introduces the concept of "share boxes", which are small widgets that are placed on your desktop. Each share box represents another machine on your local network that you can instantly share files with by dropping them on it. (You can also create a share box that will ask you which machine you want to send the files to.)

NitroShare features:
 * Dynamic file compress during transfer to decrease transfer time and bandwidth
 * DRC check sum generation to ensure file integrity during transfer
 * Full compatibility with clients running on other operating systems
 * A helpful configuration wizard to guide you through setting up the application on your machines
 * The application was developed using the Qt framework and therefore runs on any platform supported by Qt, including Windows, Mac, and Linux.

facebook status - Quick Guide to Google AdWords Traffic Estimator: How to Estimate Traffic With Google

What is the AdWords Traffic Estimator?

Not unlike the Google keyword tool, the AdWords Traffic Estimator is a tool designed by Google to give advertisers information about specific keywords before they create an AdWords campaign. Unlike the Google tool, the traffic estimator is giving more specific data points focused around not only expected traffic, but also expected costs per click and spend data.
As with the traditional keyword tool, an important thing to keep in mind in making use of the AdWords traffic estimator is to use the data with a grain of salt – the information you’ll be getting will consist of very rough estimates, and of course doesn’t give you any insights into whether the term you’re looking at will actually convert for you and help you grow your business.

How to Use the AdWords Traffic Estimator Tool in Your PPC Campaigns

Again, as with the Google Keyword Tool, there are a few input fields that represent your options for getting data back from the Traffic Estimator Tool:
Traffic estimates
As with most keyword tools you can start with a seed keyword to get ideas back, and then you can also set the Max CPC you’d like to pay for a keyword and can optionally set a daily budget (this will be based on your campaign’s daily budget where you’re considering adding the keywords, or to get a sense of the maximum potential traffic for the term you can leave the daily budget field blank).
You can also add in advanced filters for country, language, and match type:
Traffic Estimator
And finally you’re returned a series of estimates around traffic and costs:
Estimated Traffic
From there you can add keywords or take the keyword data to Excel or Google Docs to help you estimate the performance for certain terms before you add them to your account. Again this data is often inaccurate and can only give you a quick snapshot of what your average position and estimated costs would be – AdWords is an auction environment and your competitors may be constantly changing the search landscape for your target term.
Ultimately you’ll want to take this information with a grain of salt, be sure not to be over-reliant on estimates, and implement tests and iterate on any keywords and bids within your campaigns to get a true sense of the right amount of traffic and the right bids for your keywords.

- Bash Script: Using Globbing (glob) in bash script

Glob characters
* - means 'match any number of characters'. '/' is not matched
? - means 'match any single character'
[abc] - match any of the characters listed. This syntax also supports ranges, like [0-9]

Below is a simple script which explains the problem and also provide the solution using globbing:

Source:
cat glob.sh
#!/bin/bash

echo "Creating 2 files with space: this is first file.glob and another file with name.glob "
`touch "this is first file.glob"`
`touch "another file with name.glob"`

echo "---------------------------------"
echo "Using for loop to search and delete file ... failed :( "
for file in `ls *.glob`; do
        echo $file
        `rm $file`
done

echo "-------------------------------"
echo
echo "Using the another for loop to search for the same set of files ... but failed :("
for filename in "$(ls *.glob)"; do
        echo $filename
        `rm $filename`
done

# This is the example of using glob in the script
# This time BASH does know that it's dealing with filenames
echo "-------------------------------"
echo "Finnaly able to delete the file using glob method. :)"
for filename in *.glob; do

- Bash script: Using shift statement to loop through command line arguments

A shift statement is typically used when the number of arguments to a command is not known in advance and it takes a number (N), in  which the positional parameters are shifted to the left by this number, N.

Say you have a command that takes 10 arguments, and N is 4, then $4 becomes $1, $5 becomes $2 and so on. $10 becomes $7 and the original $1, $2 and $3 are thrown away.

Below is the simple example showing the usage of 'shift' statements:

Source:  cat shift2.sh
#!/bin/bash

echo "Total number of arg passed: $#"
echo "arg values are: $@"
echo "-----------------------------------------"

while [[ $# > 0 ]] ; do
        echo "\$1 = $1"
        shift
done

echo

Output: ./shift2.sh a b c d e f
Total number of arg passed: 6
arg values are: a b c d e f
-----------------------------------------
$1 = a
$1 = b
$1 = c
$1 = d
$1 = e
$1 = f

facebook status - Improve your Adsense targeting

One of the most common complaints about Google Adsense is that the ads are not relevant to the website’s content. Non-targeted ads can drastically reduce your earnings since visitors of your site will not necessarily be interested in ads that are not closely connected to the topic that they were looking for in the first place.
There is a very simple way to improve your Adsense targeting, and it is called section targeting. There is no trick behind this technique, and Google itself incentive users to use it, here is a quote from the Adsense Help Center:
Section targeting allows you to suggest sections of your text and HTML content that you’d like us to emphasize or downplay when matching ads to your site’s content. By providing us with your suggestions, you can assist us in improving your ad targeting. We recommend that only those familiar with HTML attempt to implement section targeting.
So how do you implement section targeting? All you need to do is to place the following tags before and after the content that you want to get targeted:
<!-- google_ad_section_start -->
Content to be targeted here
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
You can use as many sections as you want inside your page, and you can also place them on the header of your page so that meta keywords will be included. Bear in mind that it might take up to two weeks before you see the results of the section targeting.

Web Page Analyzer from WebsiteOptimization.com

This free tool will give you plenty of information to work with. It will test how long the page takes to load, how many objects are on the page, the size of the objects and more. The most helpful part of the report that is produced is the “Analysis and Recommendations” section where it will list 11 aspects of the page and give you a rating. Red items are warnings, yellow items are cautions, and green items are good.

SEO Analysis Tool

Get a lengthy and detailed report from this tool. It will analyze things like your meta tags, keywords, and anchor text on the page. It’s a good resource for getting a nice overall look at the SEO of your page.

The Escape’s Web Page Analyzer

This tool will help you to identify problems with heading structure, links, use of keywords and content. It’s not as detailed of a report as some of the others, but the information that’s provided is helpful and it features a better presentation than most other tools.

This tool gives you a general overview of the page and a number of specifics that have been analyzed. Like many of the other tools, it will analyze your meta tags and make suggestions if it finds that any improvements are needed. It also looks at the size of the page and the load time, keywords in the anchor text of the page, keywords in alt tags, and the keyword density.

Help to detect and avoid duplicate content penalties from search engines by comparing two pages to see how similar they are, from the perspective of a search engine. If they’re too similar you can make modifications to distinguish them and avoid having them seen as duplicates.

- Bash Script: Difference betweem single ( ' ) and double quotes ( " )

The Bash manual has this to say:

Single Quotes
Enclosing characters in single quotes (‘'’) preserves the literal value of each character within the quotes. A single quote may not occur between single quotes, even when preceded by a backslash.

Double Quotes
Enclosing characters in double quotes (‘"’) preserves the literal value of all characters within the quotes, with the exception of ‘$’, ‘`’, ‘\’, and, when history expansion is enabled, ‘!’. The characters ‘$’ and ‘`’ retain their special meaning within double quotes (see Shell Expansions). The backslash retains its special meaning only when followed by one of the following characters: ‘$’, ‘`’, ‘"’, ‘\’, or newline. Within double quotes, backslashes that are followed by one of these characters are removed. Backslashes preceding characters without a special meaning are left unmodified. A double quote may be quoted within double quotes by preceding it with a backslash. If enabled, history expansion will be performed unless an ‘!’ appearing in double quotes is escaped using a backslash. The backslash preceding the ‘!’ is not removed.

The special parameters ‘*’ and ‘@’ have special meaning when in double quotes (see Shell Parameter Expansion).

facebook status - How @replies work on Twitter (and how they might)

I see a lot of confusion around how "at replies"—tweets that start with an @ and then a username—work on Twitter. E.g.:
@Veronica I vote they should be $2.00 each. Cut down on junk mail. Isn't that the only use of postal mail these days, anyway?
10:59 AM May 09, 2008 from web in reply to Veronica
Starting my update with "@veronica" designates that I'm addressing her, specifically, much as you would in a group conversation. Also like a group conversation, she's not the only one who can see what I'm saying. If I wanted to "whisper" something instead, I'd start my message with "d veronica"—what we call a "direct message." (A person must be following you in order for you to direct message them, but not to @reply them.)

As you may know, @replies were not originally part of Twitter. They were embraced by the community first, and then we built them into the system. First, we linked the username (when using the web interface), then we added a replies tab, so you could see replies to you from people you weren't following. We also added a setting to determine what @replies you see (more about that in a minute). And most recently, we added the "swoosh" to the web interface, so you could more easily reply. Other Twitter clients have also embraced @replies in cool ways.
Today, @replies are a critical part of how Twitter works. However, they're not perfect. In fact, some people are either loath to use them or annoyed by them (or both). I believe a big reason for this is that's it's not obvious exactly how they work. In fact, I talk to even advanced Twitter users on a regular basis whom I end up explaining what the @replies setting does and who see what replies.

@Replies To You
If someone @replies you—note, this means they start a tweet with @yourusername—you will see that in your main timeline if you follow the person. But you'll see it in your replies tab, whether you follow them or not (unless you've blocked them):

@Replies tab

In some desktop clients, like Twhirl, you can see @replies to you, along with all the updates from people follow, which is neat.

The Setting
There is an @ Replies setting you can find under Settings / Notices:

@Replies Setting

This has nothing to do with @replies directed to you. This is about what @replies you see from people you follow. The default—@ replies to the people I'm following—is probably what you have it set on (98% of people do). That means, if you're following me, but not following @veronica, you wouldn't see the tweet above (unless you went to my profile).

The beauty of this is that I can feel free to @reply Veronica without worrying about the fact that only a subset of my followers also follow Veronica, so they won't know what I'm talking about. My followers will only see my update if they follow both of us (if they have their setting on the default).

We're trying to avoid the situation of you hearing someone answer a question when you didn't hear the question (for instance). Also, you don't have to hear answers to the question from people you don't want to hear from. (If you're not following them, you won't see their answer.)

This is the main thing that people are confused about, I've found. There are good reasons for this. For one, it didn't use to work like this. (Since @replies were just normal tweets at one point, all your followers would see all of your, no matter who you were replying to.) Secondly, we don't explain it very well (thus, the need for this post). And third, some people do have their setting at "all @ replies"—so they see all the replies people they're following make, even if they're not following the person being replied to. Many people I've talked to have this setting on and don't realize what it actually does. (Usually, they just want to see @replies directed to them).

Conclusion
1) You should feel free to @reply people and not worry about it being out of context to some of your followers. In general, they won't see it.

2) If you're seeing @replies directed to people you don't follow and don't want to, check your setting.

3) This is obviously too confusing. We want to make some changes to make it more clear. We could clarify the setting. But my preference is to take out the setting altogether and just make it work like the default. That way, it works the same for everyone. (If you have strong opinions on this, leave a comment.)

Cool Tools
There are a lot of other ways we'd like to enhance this functionality. But for now, Quotably has worked around the opaqueness of conversations on Twitter and aggregates @replies in a useful way. Also, Summize let's you see all replies to someone.

Tracking You
Another question I get is how to get the equivalent of the Replies tab (@replies to you, especially from people you don't follow) over SMS. The work-around for this (for some people) is just to Track your name. E.g., I send 'track ev' and get a message every time someone mentions @ev. This is not ideal, because Track currently ignores the "@" symbol, so if you have username that is common, you'll get lots of irrelevant stuff. We plan to fix that. (Also, yes, we will get the replies tab on m.twitter.com. Soon.)

facebook status - What Is Twitter And How Does It Work – Beginners Guide

I think most of you know what Twitter is, after all I’ve been writing posts about various Twitter tools and tricks. But still I get emails and some questions in comments: “What is Twitter and how does it work?” Here’s quick beginners guide to Twitter so from now on, everyone knows what I am talking about. (Because there will be more posts about Twitter and Twitter tools in future).
Don’t be overwhelmed by Twitter. It’s easy, it’s fun and it’s free. But… What is it?
People all over are Twittering. WTF is Twitter anyway? Most heavy duty techies and electronic device users know this, but still, new to many people, is this quickly rising phenomenon called “twittering”, the verb that describes the use of the application called Twitter.
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that has changed the way many people communicate. Twitter allows users to send “updates” (or “tweets”: text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) to Twitter website via short message service (e.g. on a cell phone), instant messaging, from their computer at home or work, or through a third-party application.
Some see this as a way to simply report their ’status’ to friends, some use it to post interesting links, some use it as a savvy marketing tool and still there are countless ways to utilize this real time quick messaging application.
It’s very easy to do. You just sign up (free registration), pick a user name (your site or profile web page will be ‘http://twitter.com/your name here’), and you can ‘design’ your Twitter home page by uploading an image or choosing web colors.

Then what?

Well, you can search for other twitterers by using the search box or browse other Twitter users and choose to ‘follow’ their tweets if you wish (that’s all what Twitter is about – following others and getting others to follow you). Let me be your first friend on Twitter Follow me. You can make your tweets private or public and even send messages direct to other twitterers, as opposed to publicly posting yours.
That’s all! Pretty simple I know… That should clarify all your questions and dilemmas about how Twitter works.

Stay tuned – I will be writing more posts about Twitter, like how to use it to market your business or website, connect with like-minded people and many other creative uses of this cool service.

- Bash Script: Create & Use Associative Array like Hash tables

Before using Associative Array features make sure you have bash version 4 and above, use command "bash --version" to know your bash version.

Below shell script demonstrate  the usage of associative arrays, feel free to copy and use this code.

Associative arrays are created using declare -A name

Source: cat associative_array.sh
#!/bin/bash

# use -A option declares associative array
declare -A array

# Here, you can have some other process to fill up your associative array.
array[192.168.1.1]="host1"
array[192.168.1.2]="host2"
array[192.168.1.3]="host3"
array[192.168.1.4]="host4"
array[192.168.1.5]="host5"

echo -n "Enter the ip address to know the hostname: "
read ipaddress

# Now you can use the associative array as hash table, (key,value) pairs.
echo "Hostname associated with the $ipaddress is: ${array[$ipaddress]}"

# You can also perform all the basic array operation.
# Iterate over Associative Arrays

#for hostname in "${array[@]}"; do
#       echo $hostname
#done

Output: ./associative_array.sh
Enter the ip address to know the hostname: 192.168.1.4
Hostname associated with the 192.168.1.4 is: host4
