tutorial - How To Create OpenSuse 11.0 Boot CD?

If problems occur booting your system using a boot manager or if the boot manager cannot be installed on the MBR of your hard disk or a floppy disk, it is also possible to create a bootable CD with all the necessary start-up files for Linux. This requires a CD writer installed in your system.

Creating Boot CDs
Change into a directory in which to create the ISO image, for example: cd /tmp

Create a subdirectory for GRUB:

mkdir -p iso/boot/grub

Copy the kernel, the files stage2_eltorito, initrd, menu.lst, and message to iso/boot/:

cp /boot/vmlinuz iso/boot/
cp /boot/initrd iso/boot/
cp /boot/message iso/boot/
cp /usr/lib/grub/stage2_eltorito iso/boot/grub
cp /boot/grub/menu.lst iso/boot/grub

Adjust the path entries in iso/boot/grub/menu.lst to make them point to a CD-ROM device. Do this by replacing the device name of the hard disks, listed in the format (hdx,y), in the pathnames with the device name of the CD-ROM drive, which is (cd). You may also need to adjust the paths to the kernel and the initrd—they need to point to /boot/vmlinuz and /boot/initrd, respectively. After having made the adjustments, menu.lst should look similar to the following example:

timeout 8
default 0
gfxmenu (cd)/boot/message

title Linux
   root (cd)
   kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5 vga=794 resume=/dev/sda1 \
   splash=verbose showopts
   initrd /boot/initrd
Use splash=silent instead of splash=verbose to prevent the boot messages from appearing during the boot procedure.

Create the ISO image with the following command:

mkisofs -R -b iso/boot/grub/stage2_eltorito -no-emul-boot \
-boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o grub.iso /tmp/iso

Write the resulting file grub.iso to a CD using your preferred utility. Do not burn the ISO image as data file, but use the option for burning a CD image in your burning utility.

tutorial - How To Install Adobe Flash Player 10 into Firefox 3 under Fedora 9

The Flash Player has been improved to support new and cool internet browsing features such as 3D effects, advanced 3D layouts and more. You can visit Adobe Flash Player 10 cool features here.

Adobe Flash Player 10 Installation into Firefox 3 under Fedora 9
To install flash 10 with your Firefox browser under Fedora 9 OS, simply follow the following steps.

Step One
As root, uninstall any existing adobe flash player named flash-plugin rpm package like so
# rpm -qa | grep flash-plugin | xargs rpm -e
Uninstall Fedora’s gnash and swfdec rpm packages like so
# rpm -qa | grep swfdec | xargs rpm -e
# rpm -qa | grep gnash | xargs rpm -e

Uninstalling Fedora’s mozplugger rpm is not required but can be optional. Removing mozpluggerrc would disable other browser plugins of Firefox. If you wish to uninstall mozpluggerrc rpm package, simply
# rpm -qa | grep mozpluggerrc | xargs rpm -e

Step Three
For i386 machines, download and install every rpm that you can find from this link
To install, simply
# rpm -ivh curl-7.18.2-3.fc9.i386.rpm
# rpm -ivh curl-debuginfo-7.18.2-3.fc9.i386.rpm
# rpm -ivh libcurl-7.18.2-3.fc9.i386.rpm
# rpm -ivh libcurl-devel-7.18.2-3.fc9.i386.rpm

If you have any existing rpm package simply use rpm upgrade like so
# rpm -Uvh curl-7.18.2-3.fc9.i386.rpm
# rpm -Uvh curl-debuginfo-7.18.2-3.fc9.i386.rpm
# rpm -Uvh libcurl-7.18.2-3.fc9.i386.rpm
# rpm -Uvh libcurl-devel-7.18.2-3.fc9.i386.rpm

If you your platform is not of i386 type, locate your machine’s architecture here and download those rpms located under platform folder and install it into your F9 using the same rpm command as shown recently.
If you have earlier Fedora versions, you could get libcurl rpm of your old Fedora versions here

Step Four
Now, get back to your terminal window. Ensure that curl library is within the search path
# updatedb ; locate libcurl.so.3
/usr/lib/libcurl.so.3

Ensure also that Firefox binary can be found from default path as well

# which firefox
/usr/bin/firefox

Step Five
Download Adobe Flash Player rpm plugin and install it via rpm

# wget -c http://download.macromedia.com/pub/…081108.i386.rpm

# rpm -ivh flashplayer10_install_linux_081108.i386.rpm

The above adobe flash rpm is for compiled for Fedora 9 i386 platforms, no other rpms are available for other linux platforms as of this posting.

Step Six
Go to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ folder
# cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
# ls -la /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
and make sure you have the following lines
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 2008-08-20 08:40 libflashplayer.so -> /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so

Step Seven
Restart your firefox browser and head on to www.youtube.com to test your latest installation of adobe flash player 10.
Congratulations, you’ve just installed Adobe Flash Player 10!

Adobe Flash Player 10 Installation Verification
Launch Firefox browser and enter about:config as your URL . Check for adobe flash plugin lines.

Troubleshooting
Note that nspluginwrapper rpm is not required for successful installation using Fedora 9 OS.  If the installation does not work, and you have earlier version of Fedora, try installing nspluginwrapper rpm using yum like so
# yum -y install nspluginwrapper

tutorial - How To disable virtual consoles (Alt+F1)

You can easily access these virtual console using keyboard combination by simply hitting Alt+F1 (tty1) upto sixth (Alt+F6) tty console. you can easily login to these console.

There is a quick and effective way to disable these console.

1) Open /etc/inittab file and look for the section

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --noclear tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6

As you can see above there are 6 lines (one for each virtual console), simpily placing "#" at the begning of the line will disable that particular console. Suppose I need to disable console no 4,5,6 so, in this case my inittab file will look like ..

tutorial - Difference between Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is officially supported by Red Hat for 7 years. It's a better choice if you're running important machines in production, and you don't want to upgrade your OS all the time. It also has many nice features that are useful if you are running more than a few servers.

Also, you can (sometimes) actually call Red Hat and get support for RHEL, which you will never be able to do for Fedora.

Fedora is distributed for free, and RHEL costs money.

Fedora is much more cutting-edge than RHEL is, and Fedora has a larger community of users willing to help out and give free support.

Check this to know more.

tutorial - Using your iPod on Ubuntu

The fear of “messing up” your iPod is enough to deter some users from using their iPod in Linux. On the contrary, you can use your iPod in Linux easily and without fear of “screwing anything up.”

The following is a tutorial for beginners that are considering using their iPod with Linux.

The first step is to install gtkpod. Open a terminal and type the following command:

sudo apt-get install gtkpod

Update: this install command is native to Ubuntu. Go to the gtkpod homepage and install the package that is appropriate for your system if the above command does not work.

The second step is to connect your iPod (if Rhythmbox opens automatically close it). Your iPod should automatically be detected (similar to the way it would be in Windows). The quick way to make sure your iPod is mounted correctly is to go to Computer in GNOME and make sure your iPod shows up. This is shown below: iPod in Linux image

The third step is to launch gtkpod. When you launch, select iPod on the left and click the Read button (top left). You should now see a list of all the songs on your iPod (or none if the iPod is new). This is shown below:

iPod Linux Image 1

If you would like to add any songs to your iPod, make sure the iPod is still selected in the pane on the left and go to File >> Add Files

The last step is to select the Sync button at the top right of the screen. After you sync your iPod it will be ready for use.

iPod Linux Image 2

Note: If you did not read the contents of the iPod you will get the following message after selecting Sync (shown below), “You did not import the existing iTunesDB. This is most likely incorrect and will result in the loss of the existing database.” Do not press OK unless it is the first time you are putting songs onto your iPod otherwise your iTunesDB file will be deleted.

iPod warning message image

If your iTunesDB file does get deleted, don’t worry there is an easy fix. Close and re-open gtkpod, select your iPod in the navigation pane on the left-hand side and choose File >> Export Tracks from Database >> Selected Tab Entry. Depending on how many songs are on your iPod this may take awhile and you will get an orphaned warning for every song (shown below). Don’t worry, it’s okay.

iPod orphaned warning image

After your iPod has been scanned, choose Synchronize iTunesDB and select OK to the warning that comes up and your iTunesDB file will be restored.

tutorial - What is GNU?

GNU is an acronym for Gnu's Not Unix. A gnu is a large beast and is the motif of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). GNU is a `recursive' acronym.

Richard Stallman is the founder of the FSF and the creator of the GNU General Public License. One of the purposes of the FSF is to promote and develop free alternatives to proprietary software. The GNU project is an effort to create a free Unix-like operating system from scratch and was started in 1984.

GNU represents this free software licensed under the GNU General Public License. GNU software is software designed to meet a higher set of standards than its proprietary counterparts.

GNU has also become a movement in the computing world. When the word GNU is mentioned, it usually evokes feelings of extreme left wing genius's who produce free software in their spare time that is far superior to anything even large corporations can come up with through years of dedicated development. It also means distributed and open development, consistency, compatibility and technical cutting edge information technology. GNU means doing things once in the best way possible, providing solutions instead of quick fixes, and looking exhaustively at possibilities instead of going for the most brightly coloured expedient approach.

tutorial - Protection from malware using Squid proxy server

Malware (for "malicious software") is any program or file that is harmful to a computer user. Thus, malware includes computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and also spyware, programming that gathers information about a computer user without permission.

Ignoring the threat of malware is one of the most reckless things you can do in today's increasingly hostile computing environment. Malware is malicious code planted on your computer, and it can give the attacker a truly alarming degree of control over your system, network, and data - without your knowledge

Now, you can get complete protection from such malware by using/configuring the Malware Block List with squid so that you, your network and your users are protected.

Visit : http://www.malware.com.br for more information of the Malware Block List

To use the Malware Block List on a Squid proxy to block user access to URLs that contain Malware you need to perform the following simple steps:

* Download the block list:
      wget -O - http://malware.hiperlinks.com.br/cgi/submit?action=list_squid > malware_block_list.txt

* Create an ACL in the main configuration file (squid.conf) pointing to a file which will have the list URLs:
      acl malware_block_list url_regex -i "/etc/squid/malware_block_list.txt"

* Enable the ACL created previously:
      http_access deny malware_block_list
      deny_info http://malware.hiperlinks.com.br/denied.shtml malware_block_list

* Force Squid reconfiguration:
      squid -k reconfigure

To have an up-to-date block list, create a cron job to run every 4 hours, pointing to a script like this:
      #!/bin/sh
      wget -O - http://malware.hiperlinks.com.br/cgi/submit?action=list_squid > /etc/squid  /malware_block_list.txt
      squid -k reconfigure

* Testing  time: After reloading the squid, try to visit the following site ("www.uploadhut.com"), you should see something like ..

If you are able to see this page on your browser -- relax, you are now safe from the malware :)

tutorial - Naming Conventions for Hard Disks and Partitions

The naming conventions GRUB uses for hard disks and partitions differ from those used for normal Linux devices. It more closely resembles the simple disk enumeration the BIOS does and the syntax is similar to that used in some BSD derivatives. In GRUB, the numbering of the partitions starts with zero. This means that (hd0,0) is the first partition of the first hard disk. On a common desktop machine with a hard disk connected as primary master, the corresponding Linux device name is /dev/sda1.

The four possible primary partitions are assigned the partition numbers 0 to 3. The logical partitions are numbered from 4:

(hd0,0) first primary partition of the first hard disk
(hd0,1) second primary partition
(hd0,2) third primary partition
(hd0,3) fourth primary partition (usually an extended partition)
(hd0,4) first logical partition
(hd0,5) second logical partition

Being dependent on BIOS devices, GRUB does not distinguish between IDE, SATA, SCSI, and hardware RAID devices. All hard disks recognized by the BIOS or other controllers are numbered according to the boot sequence preset in the BIOS.

Unfortunately, it is often not possible to map the Linux device names to BIOS device names exactly. It generates this mapping with the help of an algorithm and saves it to the file device.map, which can be edited if necessary.

tutorial - /etc/grub.conf explained

The following example shows the structure of a GRUB menu file. The example installation has a Linux boot partition under /dev/sda5, a root partition under /dev/sda7, and a Windows installation under /dev/sda1.

    gfxmenu (hd0,4)/boot/message
    color white/blue black/light-gray
    default 0
    timeout 8

    title linux
    root (hd0,4)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda7 vga=791 resume=/dev/sda9
    initrd /boot/initrd

    title windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,4)
    chainloader(hd0,0)+1

The first block defines the configuration of the splash screen:

gfxmenu (hd0,4)/boot/message
The background image message is located in the top directory of the /dev/sda5 partition.

color white/blue black/light-gray

Color scheme: white (foreground), blue (background), black (selection), and light gray (background of the selection). The color scheme has no effect on the splash screen, only on the customizable GRUB menu that you can access by exiting the splash screen with Esc.

default 0
The first menu entry title linux is the one to boot by default.

timeout 8
After eight seconds without any user input, GRUB automatically boots the default entry. To deactivate automatic boot, delete the timeout line. If you set timeout 0, GRUB boots the default entry immediately.

The second and last block lists the various bootable operating systems. The sections for the individual operating systems are introduced by title.

The first entry (title linux) is responsible for booting Linux. The kernel (vmlinuz) is located in the first logical partition (the boot partition) of the first hard disk. Kernel parameters, such as the root partition and VGA mode, are appended here. The root partition is specified according to the Linux naming convention (/dev/sda7/), because this information is read by the kernel and has nothing to do with GRUB. The initrd is also located in the first logical partition of the first hard disk.

The second entry is responsible for loading Windows. Windows is booted from the first partition of the first hard disk (hd0,0). The command chainloader +1 causes GRUB to read and execute the first sector of the specified partition.

The menu file can be changed whenever necessary. GRUB then uses the modified settings during the next boot.

tutorial - How to setup Boot Password (Grub)

Even before the operating system is booted, GRUB enables access to file systems. Users without root permissions can access files in your Linux system to which they have no access once the system is booted. To block this kind of access or prevent users from booting certain operating systems, set a boot password.
As the user root, proceed as follows to set a boot password:

At the root prompt, encrypt the password using grub-md5-crypt:

# grub-md5-crypt
Password: ****
Retype password: ****
Encrypted: $1$lS2dv/$JOcHkLosIn7CJk9xShzzJVw/

Paste the encrypted string into the global section of the file menu.lst:

gfxmenu (hd0,4)/message
color white/blue black/light-gray
default 0
timeout 8
password --md5 $1$lS2dv/$JOcHkLosIn7CJk9xShzzJVw/

Now GRUB commands can only be executed at the boot prompt after pressing P and entering the password. However, users can still boot all operating systems from the boot menu.

To prevent one or several operating systems from being booted from the boot menu, add the entry lock to every section in menu.lst that should not be bootable without entering a password. For example:

title linux
   kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda7 vga=791
   initrd (hd0,4)/initrd
   lock

After rebooting the system and selecting the Linux entry from the boot menu, the following error message is displayed:

Error 32: Must be authenticated

Press Enter to enter the menu. Then press P to get a password prompt. After entering the password and pressing Enter, the selected operating system (Linux in this case) should boot.

tutorial - Opensource load balancing Software

Linux Virtual Server
The Linux Virtual Server Project is a project to cluster many real servers together into a highly available, high-performance virtual server. The LVS load balancer handles connections from clients and passes them on the the real servers (so-called Layer 4 switching) and can virtualize almost any TCP or UDP service, like HTTP, HTTPS, NNTP, FTP, DNS, ssh, POP3, IMAP4, SMTP, etc. It is fully transparent to the client accessing the virtual service.

BalanceNG
BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence, different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Weighted Random, Least Session, Least Bandwidth, Hash, Agent, and Randomized Agent) and a customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It supports VRRP to set up high availability configurations on multiple nodes. It supports SNMP, integrating the BALANCENG-MIB with Net-SNMPD. It implements a very fast in-memory IP-to-location database, allowing powerful location-based server load-balancing.
Homepage:http://www.inlab.de/balanceng/

HAproxy
HAproxy is a high-performance and highly-robust TCP and HTTP load balancer which provides cookie-based persistence, content-based switching, advanced traffic regulation with surge protection, automatic failover, run-time regex-based header control, Web-based reporting, advanced logging to help trouble-shooting buggy applications and/or networks, and a few other features. Its own event-driven state machine achieves 20,000 hits per second and surpasses GigaEthernet on modern hardware, even with tens of thousands of simultaneous connections.
Homepage:http://haproxy.1wt.eu/

Pen
Pen is a load balancer for "simple" TCP-based protocols such as HTTP or SMTP. It allows several servers to appear as one to the outside. It automatically detects servers that are down and distributes clients among the available servers. This gives high availability and scalable performance.
Homepage:http://siag.nu/pen/

Crossroads Load Balancer
Crossroads is a daemon running in user space, and features extensive configurability, polling of back ends using wake up calls, status reporting, many algorithms to select the 'right' back end for a request (and user-defined algorithms for very special cases), and much more. Crossroads is service-independent: it is usable for any TCP service, such as HTTP(S), SSH, SMTP, and database connections. In the case of HTTP balancing, Crossroads can provide session stickiness for back end processes that need sessions, but aren't session-aware of other back ends. Crossroads can be run as a stand-alone daemon or via inetd.
Homepage:http://crossroads.e-tunity.com/

balance
Balance is a simple but powerful generic TCP proxy with round-robin load balancing and failover mechanisms. Its behavior can be controlled at runtime using a simple command line syntax. Balance supports IPv6 on the listening side, which makes it a very useful tool for IPv6 migration of IPv4 only services and servers.
Homepage:http://www.inlab.de/balance.html

Distributor load balancer
Distributor is a software TCP load balancer. Like other load balancers, it accepts connections and distributes them to an array of back end servers. It is compatible with any standard TCP protocol (HTTP, LDAP, IMAP, etc.) and is also IPv6 compatible. It has many unique and advanced features and a high-performance architecture.
Homepage:http://distributor.sourceforge.net/

Pure Load Balancer
Pure Load Balancer is a high-performance software load balancer for the HTTP and SMTP protocols. It uses an asynchronous non-forking/non-blocking model, and provides fail-over abilities. When a backend server goes down, it automatically removes it from the server pool, and tries to bring it back to life later. Pure Load Balancer has full IPv6 support and works on OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD and Linux.
Homepage:http://plb.sunsite.dk/

Load Balancer Project
The Load Balancer Project is a tool that allows you to balance requests using clusters of servers. The goal is to achieve high availability load balancing with a simple configuration for the load balancer and the network topology. It leaves the servers untouched so the configuration only resides on the load balancer, and it allows you to manage any type of service via a plugin model design and a transparent proxy feature.
Homepage:http://www.jmcresearch.com/projects/loadbalancer/

mod_athena
mod_athena is an Apache-based application load balancer for large systems. It allows the HTTP server to act as a load balancer either internally to Apache's own mod_proxy (for reverse proxying), or externally to machines querying it. Arbitrary statistics are sent to the engine via a simple GET plus query-string interface, from which it will then make decisions based on chosen algorithms.
Homepage:http://ath.sourceforge.net/

udpbalancer
Udpbalancer is a reverse proxy that sorts UDP requests from your clients to your servers. It may operate in round-robin, volume balance, and load balance modes.
Homepage:http://dev.acts.hu/udpbalancer/

MultiLoad
MultiLoad is a load balancer that redirects HTTP requests to pre-defined servers/locations. It gives the provider a way to balance the traffic and hides the real download location. It allows you to manage different version of each download. It is also a load balancing server extension. You can distribute files on some servers so that a downloaded file can be loaded form different servers. These servers can have different priorities to control the active traffic.
