What began as a project helmed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two students in Stanford University's Ph.D. program, is now one of the most influential companies on the World Wide Web: Google. At first, the students' goal was to make an efficient search engine that gave users relevant links in response to search requests. While that's still Google's core purpose today, the company now provides services ranging from e-mail and document storage to productivity software and mobile phone operating systems. In less than a decade, Google evolved from a two-man enterprise to a multibillion-dollar corporation.

Today, Google's popularity continues to grow. In 2007, the company surpassed Microsoft as the most visited site on the Web [source: Kopytoff]. The company's influence on the Web is undeniable. Practically every webmaster wants his or her site listed high on Google's search engine results pages (SERPs), because it almost always translates into more traffic on the corresponding Web site. Google has also acquired other Internet companies, ranging from blogging services to the video-sharing site YouTube. For a while, the company's search technology even powered rival companies' search engines -- Yahoo! relied on Google searches for nearly four years until developing its own search engine technologies in 2004.

Google's influence isn't limited to just the Web. In 2007, company executives announced their intention to enter the FCC's auction of the wireless spectrum in the 700 megahertz (MHz) band. That part of the wireless spectrum previously belonged to analog television broadcasters. Google representatives said the company entered the auction to foster competition within the wireless service industry. Google supported an open technology approach to wireless service in which consumers could use any device with any provider rather than face limited choices determined by the provider and its preferred vendors. In order to participate in the auction, Google had to prove it was ready to meet the reserve price for the spectrum: $4.6 billion. Ultimately, Google didn't win the auction. But the company still achieved its main goal -- Verizon, which won the bid, must follow the open technology approach Google wanted.

In this article, we'll learn about the backbone of Google's business: its search engine. We'll also look at the other services Google offers to both average users and to commercial businesses. Then we'll take a quick peek at some of the tools Google has developed over the years. We'll also learn more about the equipment Google uses to keep its massive operation running. Finally, we'll take a closer look at Google the company.

About Google Sitemap Generator

Our new open-source Google Sitemap Generator finds new and modified URLs based on your webserver's traffic, its log files, or the files found on the server. By combining these methods, Google Sitemap Generator can be very fast in finding these URLs and calculating relevant metadata, thereby making your Sitemap files as effective as possible. Once Google Sitemap Generator has collected the URLs, it can create the following Sitemap files for you:

XML Sitemaps for Web Search according to the sitemaps.org standard
Mobile Sitemaps for mobile-friendly websites
Code Search Sitemaps for source code that you make available to users

In addition, Google Sitemap Generator can send a ping to Google Blog Search for all of your new or modified URLs. You can optionally include the URLs of the Sitemap files in your robots.txt file as well as "ping" the other search engines that support the sitemaps.org standard.

Sending the URLs to the right Sitemap files is simple thanks to the web-based administration console. This console gives you access to various features that make administration a piece of cake while maintaining a high level of security by default.

Getting started

Google Sitemap Generator is a server plug-in that can be installed on both Linux/Apache and Microsoft IIS Windows-based servers. As with other server-side plug-ins, you will need to have administrative access to the server to install it. You can find detailed information for the installation in the Google Sitemap Generator documentation.

We're excited to release Google Sitemap Generator with the source code and hope that this will encourage more web hosters to include this or similar tools in their hosting packages!

There’s a lot of information out there on how to optimize content to get visitors. What many new web developers overlook is that their images are great for traffic purposes, too. Just like with traditional content, there are techniques and strategies to optimize images for as much traffic as possible. A Google image is one of the most consistently used platforms to find images, so many of the techniques rely on the particulars of Google images. What follows are some of the best methods to optimize your images to attract Google images traffic.

Label Your Images Correctly

While tags have become less popular as a way to optimize whole pages for traffic, they are still the best way to optimize images. There are several opportunities to maximize any image. First, ensure that the filename of the image is related to what the image is. Then, set up an appropriate alt text for the image that expands on the file name to include closely related keywords. Finally, ensure that the title tags for the image are relevant as well.

Other Factors

There is also evidence that Google Images may consider other factors, such as the text that surrounds the image and the content on the rest of the page. You may want to consider limiting the amount of content on pages where your images appear to only the most relevant content to the image. If you have too much on a single page, your image risks losing the tight focus necessary to rank for an image search term.

Consider Your Audience

Google has many helpful options to allow users to assess an image before they click on it, so if your image fits their needs poorly, they’ll never click on it in the first place. In this way, quality images are just as important as quality content. Make sure your images are of a comfortable enough resolution that it can be seen when shrunk to Googles Images thumbnails. Consider whether or not your audience is looking for a small or a large image, as well.

Consider the Competition

Respect that you have competition and assess the other images that are available for your audience when they are searching for an image with your keywords. If you know that your image is a lower quality that the others available, you may have an opportunity to seize traffic by developing an image that could beat out the others available.

Q – Why has my request been denied? I contacted the site owner and he/she removed the offending keywords.
A – The most common reason is because the wrong option was selected in the removal tool. You need the second option, where you must input a word that has been removed from the page by the webmaster/site owner.
Q – I selected the correct option but Google still denies me?
A – You need to check you have inputted the correct url into the tool and the keywords do not appear ANYWHERE on the page. If you were trying to remove the name [ John Doe ] then both of those words must be removed from the page.
It bears repeating: For this option to be successful you must make sure all the keywords you enter into the tool have been fully removed from the original web page first.

Google Accepted My Removal Request But Search Result Still Appears

Q – Google accepted my cache removal request but why do I still see it in the search results?
A – Choosing the second option in the removal does not result in a complete removal. Google, if they accept your request it will remove the snippet of text and the link titled “cache”
The actual blue link that directs visitors to the web page will only disappear after Google revisits the page and updates it. The only way you can forcibly remove the result is to contact the site owner and get the page taken down or blocked from search engines as per my page here.

Removing Adult Images From Google

While Google doesn’t remove adult image from their core results they will consider removing them from the filtered and child friendly Safesearch results.
Google’s documents claim they will remove “inappropriate content” but there have been reports of failed requests, even though the content appeared to be adult in nature and certainly unsuitable for children.

Report Images Vs Removal Tool

There are two ways to inform Google of adult or inappropriate content, the first is via a link titled “report images” from the main image search results.
The second option is to use the Google removal tool.
The report images link is useful if you want to leave feedback but to request an actual removal use the tool. You can revisit the removal tool at any time and check the status of your request, you should see a label that reads; pending, removed or denied.

Reasons For Denial

It can take from a few days up to a week for Google to review your image removal request. It is worth remembering that this tool only removes images from the Safesearch filtered results.
The most common reasons for denial are:

You added the wrong url to the tool
The image doesn’t appear in the filtered results
The Google team has determined that the image is not “inappropriate” enough for removal

Option 3 In The Google Removal Tool (personal info)

Option 3 in the Google removal tool will reveal several forms you can use to remove the following pieces of personal information that may appear in the search results:

Social security or ID number in search results
Bank account or credit card number
Image of handwritten signature
Full name or business name appears on spammy adult site

All of these forms are reviewed manually and they will usually take action or respond to you within 5 days. If you are asking them to remove a spammy adult site that contains your name then it may take a bit longer – usually 10 days.

Reasons For Denial

Because the forms are reviewed manually it is very difficult to find out exactly why a request was denied or why you still see the unwanted search results.
If you are unfortunate enough to have received a denial then read my checklist and feel free to submit another request to Google:
1) Duplicate pages – web sites often create several pages that contain the same content. That means you may have to send several removal requests to Google. One request per page (url).
2) The page is no longer indexed by Google – check that the url is still in Google’s index, remember they can only remove a result if it contains the offending info. They won’t remove a page just because it contains a link to another page which contains the info.
3) Double check that you are pasting in the correct url – must be of the original web page, not of the search result page.
4) Name on spammy porn page – these requests are only successful if your name appears on an adult site that is spamming the search engine. If you see a violation of the Google Webmaster Guidelines then it would be considered spam. If the site isn’t spamming then they will not accept your removal request.

Contacting Google by Telephone or Email

I am not aware of anyway to contact them directly by telephone/email etc. The forms are the best way to request removal of this sensitive information. If you don’t see a form that matches your issue then please my guide to removing search results from Google.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is more important than ever for getting your website noticed. You can take the chance that a crawler will stumble on your site, but why not improve your odds by submitting your site directly to search engines? Manually submitting your site to the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and Bing offers a few advantages: it ensures that the search engines will crawl your site, and can help your site get into an index faster. Think of it as moving your site to the front of the search line. Here’s how you do it.

Submitting Your Site to Google

To submit your site to the Google index, all you have to do is go to www.google.com/addurl/. Enter the URL for your home page into the appropriate box (including the http://), add any comments you might have about your site, and then click the Add URL button. That’s it! Google will now add your site to the Googlebot crawl list, and your site will appear in appropriate search results.

Note that you have to add only the top-level URL for your site; you don’t have to add URLs for any subsidiary pages. For example, if your home page is http://www.homepage.com/index.html, enter only http://www.homepage.com. Googlebot will crawl the rest of your site once it finds the main URL.

Submitting Your Site to Yahoo!

Submitting your website to Yahoo! is an equally simple process. Point your web browser to http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit/. Here you have the option of submitting the URL for a website or for a blog or website feed. You’ll probably use the former, although if your site has an RSS feed, you can achieve better ongoing results by submitting the URL of the feed instead.

Taking the simple approach, all you have to do is enter your website’s URL into the Submit a Website or Webpage box; make sure you include the http:// prefix. After entering your URL, click the Submit URL button, and you’re done.

Google and Yahoo! are just two of the big three search engines; you should also submit your site to Windows Live Search. Go to http://search.msn.com.sg/docs/submit.aspx and enter your entire site URL into the box (including the http://) and then click the Submit URL button. As with the Google and Yahoo! submission services, Live Search’s MSNBot crawler will be instructed to crawl your site and index all the internal pages linked from your home page.

A: Sure. Just forward this email (with the attachment) to your Google Docs address. You’ll soon get an email back containing the link of your uploaded presentation that can be viewed in the mobile phone browser without requiring any Office viewer.
Q: I wrote a long document in Google Docs in English but my client is insisting for a French version. Can we translate Google Docs documents online?
A: Publish your Google Docs document as a public web page (read steps) and then use the online Google Translate tool to translate this page into any other language. You may copy-paste the translated text in a new document and then turn off public sharing for the original document.
Q: I am sending a Google Docs document to a large mailing list. Is is possible to track who read the document and when?

A: Go to your Google Docs Settings page (link) and turn on the option that says "Track visits to my documents using Google Analytics".

A: Create a bookmark for http://docs.google.com/m and set this to open in Firefox sidebar. You can browse all documents though the sidebar but can’t create new stuff.
Q. Can I use Google Docs like Microsoft OneNote for taking notes and saving web clippings?
A: Open a new Google Document in a separate browser tab and drag the clipping from another browser tab / window into this document. That’s it. Not sure if this works with Google Chrome.

Why do you need maps? Most probably you use maps to get directions to somewhere or find a location. But why do you need to use maps on your website? If you are representing a business or offering services via website, your customers or people who are interested in your business may much prefer to find out where is your company or organization located. However you can just display official address or mention location on your website. Does it make sense? Hmm... for some extent. But sometimes your address could be doubtful for some people. So you can overcome this by displaying a map with directions for someone who wanna come over to your company or organization. Else you may wanna use maps to interpret a location for your audience. However there could be lot of usages beyond what I could think of right now. I ll leave it to you. Would you like to embed a map on your blog or website too?

If someone wanna come over to your company or organization, a map would be really helpful for him/her to figure out directions. Eventhough if someone don't wanna reach out, a map could emphasis about a real business behind the website. Or you just wanna embed a map on your article so your readers find it useful. However if you are looking forward to embed a map on your website, Google Maps is great service to display maps on your website. Basically Google Maps is a map service that you can explore or search locations and get driving directions immediately. Further it helps you create your own custom maps too. However here we gonna help you out with embedding a map on your website.
Before You Go:

If you wanna plot multiple locations on a map, you need to sign in to your Google account. If you haven't got one, create a new Google account.

Steps:

1. Navigate to Google Maps website.
2. Now select as per your requirement, select and follow relevant option from below.
Plot One Location

i. Search for a location or locate the area you wanna display.
ii. Now you need to select map type and attributes you'd like to display. Select them from top right menu.

Notes:

Some attributes or options such as Photos, Weather may not compatible with embeddable map.
Use zoom level control and position control on the left of the map to adjust your map display as you would like it to appear on your website.

Plot Multiple Locations

i. Click on My places button from left pane.
ii. Sign in to your Google account via Sign in button, if you haven't already signed in.
iii. Now click Create Map button.
iv. Add a title for your map and a description if you prefer. Further you can change privacy options as listed.
v. Click on Placemark icon on the map and mark your locations one by one with added title and description on the map.
vi. Now you need to select map type and attributes you'd like to display. Select them from top right menu.

Notes:

Some attributes or options such as Photos, Weather may not compatible with embeddable map.
Use zoom level control and position control on the left of the map to adjust your map display as you would like it to appear on your website.

vii. Save your map and click Done.
viii. Now click on Rate this map link underneath your map details on left pane.
ix. Rate your map and click on your map preview.

3. Now click on the link icon on left panel.
4. Now click on the link Customize and preview embedded map on the box.

Note: If you can't find Customize and preview embedded map link on the box, you may have selected an incompatible attribute or option at the map display. Try deselecting options such as Photos, Weather.

5. You will get the customization window for your map. Select your preferred map size or enter custom dimension values.

6. At the bottom of customization window you will able to find embeddable code for your map. Now grab your code snippet and add it to your website.

Note: If you are a Blogger user and wanna add it to your layout, you can add your map code snippet via HTML/JavaScript element.

All of us know that Google Adsense is the highest paying advertising network in the world, but we also know how hard it can be to get approved for the Adsense program. Even I too was rejected about two times before I was finally accepted for the Adsense program.

Along my blogging journey till now, I have come across a lot of tips that can help you get your adsense account approved quickly and so today I am going to share them to you all.

First of All let us review the minimum requirements for the Google Adsense program:

Google Adsense Minimum Requirements:

You should be older than 18 years to apply for Adsense. If you are smaller than 18 years than you could ask your Parents to apply on your behalf.
You should have a fully launched website. Google Adsense does not entertain Under Construction websites.
Your website should have a good amount of content. You should know that Google does not accept sites with very less contents.
A valid email address that works because you will be getting verification and confirmation email in that address
A bank account so that you can deposit the checks that you receive from Adsense.
Your blog/website must not contain illegal content, pornography and hate-related stuffs.
Your website or blog should be 6 months old. (Well, I know that Google is not quite strict on this requirement and if the Google Adsense Team finds that your website is good enough then they approve it even if it is 1-2 months old.)

Tips to Get Quick Approval In Adsense

The following tips will try to answer the question “How To Get Approved In Adsense?”

Make Sure you have atleast around 10-12 posts in your blog before you apply for Adsense.

Make sure that you have atleast a decent amount of traffic to your blog or website. Google would not accept anyone having 10-20 unique visitors a day.

If you are thinking about starting a website or a blog and have not started one yet, you should get yourself a domain which has a good age ( Age means the amount of time the domain has been live and used for a website). A good enough age would be 1-2 years and more.

Avoid writing anything about Adsense before you apply for Adsense. Even if you do write, avoid writing anything negative against Google, Adsense or any of Google’s subsidiaries.

Avoid using advertising from other networks when you apply for Adsense. Google hates competition.

Do not use high Paying keywords in your site when you apply for Adsense. Google may get the hint that you are there only for the money and not for providing information and knowledge to your readers.

Write quality content on your blog/website, Do not use freely available articles from Article Directories or PLR Articles. Google takes your content quite into consideration before approving or disapproving sites to their program.

Build a good amount of backlinks to your blog/site. If you can, then build links from quality sites with good PR. Your backlink popularity may just impress the Google team to approve your application.

If you are a business owner then try adding a blog related to your business to your site before you apply for Adsense. Add a blog, add contents to it and promote it enough to get decent traffic.You could impress Google Team by your attachment to the business.

If you are just starting blogging, choose niches which pleases Google for example Open Source, Charity etc. You may just strike the softer part of the Google Adsense Team. (Well, on a short note: This cannot be possible if you are already blogging and have a blog/website in a niche, so you could just make a blogspot Blog around a soft-niche as mentioned above and build some link and traffic around it.)

If your website is not a blog but a ‘traditional informational website’, make sure you have at least 10 pages. Make Sure your main page link to these 10 pages in a clear and concise way.

Have an ‘About’ page. Google really wants to know What is your site about and Who Are You?

Have a ‘Privacy Policy’ Page. If you don’t know how to make one, go to freeprivacypolicy.com

Your site has to be easy to navigate and legible. No misleading links that route everywhere and frustrate a vistor.

If you are using WordPress, then do sure to add some information about yourself in your profile and do not forget to use your real name. It increases creditability.

Avoid writing about Black Hat Techniques while applying for Google Adsense
