tutorial - Working with tar with encryption

STEP 1 (Using the tar command on the directory /stuff)

Suppose you have a directory /stuff. To tar everything in stuff to create a “.tar” file.

$ tar -cvf stuff.tar stuff

Which will create “stuff.tar”.

STEP 2 (Using the tar command to create a “.tar.gz” of /stuff)

$ tar -czf stuff.tar.gz stuff

STEP 3 (List the files in the archive)

$ tar -tzf stuff.tar.gz
or
$ tar -tf stuff.tar

STEP 4 (A way to list specific files)

Note, pipe the results to a file and edit

$ tar -tzf stuff.tar.gz > mout

Then, edit mout to only include the files you want

$ tar -T mout -xzf stuff.tar.gz

The above command will only get the files in mout. Of couse, if you want them all

$ tar -xzf stuff.tar.gz

STEP 5 (ENCRYPTION)

$ tar -zcvf - stuff|openssl des3 -salt -k secretpassword | dd of=stuff.des3

This will create stuff.des3…don’t forget the password you put in place of secretpassword. This can be done interactive as well.

$ dd if=stuff.des3 |openssl des3 -d -k secretpassword|tar zxf -

NOTE: above there is a “-” at the end… this will extract everything.

tutorial - Fetchmail Configuration

First make an empty file named “.fetchmailrc” in your home directory. The easiest way for it is to use the command “touch”.
$ cd ~/
$ touch .fetchmailrc

Then change the permission of that file to 600 (that is, readable and writable only by the owner of the file).
$ chmod 600 .fetchmailrc

Now add these lines to .fetchmailrc file

poll SERVER with proto PROTOCOL
user REMOTE_USER there with password REMOTE_PASSWORD is LOCAL_USER here

You must replace all the capital-letter words with the real values.

SERVER is the name of server you use to receive e-mails.
PROTOCOL is the type of SERVER (for example, IMAP or POP3). If you don’t know, use AUTO.
REMOTE_USER is the user name of the account you have on the SERVER.
REMOTE_PASSWORD is the password for REMOTE_USER.
LOCAL_USER is the user name of the account you have on your machine. Don’t use “root”.

Example: You can have multiple account configuration

poll pop.anydomain.com with proto POP3
user nikesh there with password password is otheruser here

poll pop.otherdomain with proto POP3
user user1 there with password pass is user2 here

It’s the time to run fetchmail.
$ fetchmail

You can use “-v” option to see what is going on.
$ fetchmail -v

For an automatic pick-up of your mail, you could write your own script that calls fetchmail every hour and delivers the mail. But in stead of using the cron-daemon you can start fetchmail also in daemon mode. This is very easily done by this command : fetchmail –daemon 3600

Interval (3600) is a numeric argument that specifies the polling interval in seconds.

tutorial - Cutting the tcp/ip network connection with cutter

Just imagine that people in your private network using peer to peer software such as Kazaa, iMesh or others and you want to cut them or just want to cut all ftp connection over firewall but not all traffic to host. For examples:

Suppose a client workstation 192.168.1.1 sending ftp, http, ssh traffic using 192.168.1.254 (Linux based) router to server outside our network, and you would like to cut ftp traffic without effecting other connection? So how you are going to do that? Simply use cutter utility.

Cutter is an open source program that allows Linux firewall administrators to abort TCP/IP connections routed over Linux based firewall. This tool is very handy in situation like:

To terminate connection such as SSH tunnels or VPNs left by our own users
To abort crackers attacks as soon as they detected
To kill high bandwidth consuming connection
To kill peer-to-peer traffic etc ...

But how to use it?

Download the cutter and install it on Linux firewall:

1) Login to your iptables based firewall router
2) Identify your internal connection (use netstat or tcpdump)

3) Use cutter as follows
cutter {IP-address} {Port}

Examples:
Cut all connections from 192.168.1.5 to server
# cutter 192.168.1.5

Cut all ssh connection from 192.168.1.5 to server
# cutter 192.168.1.5 22

Cut all ssh connection from 192.168.1.5 to ssh server 202.54.1.20
# cutter 202.54.1.20 192.168.1.5 22

Please note that cutter has been designed for use as a administrators tool for Linux firewalls do not use this tool for malicious purpose. For more information about this tool & how actually it works by sending FIN -> ACK -> RST sequence of packets to terminate connection, see the official web site.

tutorial - squid configuration : ACL's based on MAC address

There are many times that client are having dynamic ip address (assigned by DHCP server) and in this cases it's hard to set any rules on bases of ip address as, you would not know what ip address the client machine be getting, in such case we could use mac based ACL's to set up any rules on that particular machine. # vi /etc/squid/squid.conf Look for acl section and append ACL as follows: acl mac1 arp 00:11:22:70:44:90 acl mac2 arp 00:11:22:33:44:55 http_access allow mac1 http_access allow mac2 http_access deny all Save and close the file.
